The veryrocky soils are associated with the calcaerous formations of theLower and Middle Cretaceous.Topography is rapidly reaching a fairly high altitude, startingwith a few hunched meters up to 2 000 m, determining betweenthese two levels some distinctive climate conditions.Carpentras (102 m) : annual mean temperature: 13°2;annual rainfall: 670 mm.Mont Ventoux (1 912 m): annual mean temperature : 2°3;annual rainfall : 1 300 mm.Snow, nebulosity and seasonal winds emphasize these conditionswhich are resulting in a succession of plant communities : at thelower level stands the oak forest with Quercus ilex L. and Quercuslanuginosa Lamb., successively replaced by the montane beech forest, and the pseudo-alpine grass assosciations at the highest level. They A. first reviews the studies made by botanists a centuryago on this particular area and relates the improvements carriedout by foresters to the coppice forest degraded by pasturing : plantationsof Quercus ilex and Quercus lane(/inosa, for truffle culture;seedlings of Cedros atlantica Man., and finally plantations of f'inuslaricio var. austriaca Endl. and Pines uncivafa Ram.These reforestations installed around 1560, resulted in the formationof two managed forest compartments:1sc forest compartment of cedar, called Rolland and covering436 ha.2n forest compartment of pines, called Perrache and covering316 ha.
