Heavy metal mobility in paper sludge-amended soil columns

The land application of sludge from pulp mills could be one of the most useful and ecological approaches to solving two problems: waste disposal and soil organic matrer reduction. However, the use of this product can imply several risks derived from the high content of heavy metals. Heavy metal content is a limiting factor for the continual and generalised agronomic utilisation of some organic residues. Therefore, a study of the mobility of heavy metals in soil and of heavy metal leaching, seems to be a judicious and necessary practice when this sludge is used.
