Assesments of the occurence of thrips were carried out in winter rye and triticale crops during the period 2002-2004 and in winter wheat crops during the period 2002-2003 in Dotnuva. The experimental evidence suggest that the occurence and abundance of thrips in winter cereals varied depending on plant growth stages. The maximal abundance of thrips in winter cereals was recorded at flowering and grain formation stages. Of the winter cereals under observation, thrips were found to spread most abundantly in winter rye. During the maximal abundance of thrips in rye in 2002, 2003 and 2004, the number of thrips on rye stems was 1.14, 2.12 and 4.08 times higher compared with the maximal abundance of thrips during the same years in triticale. In wheat, during the maximal abundance of thrips in 2002 and 2003 the number of thrips on stems wasby 8.30 and 8.69 times lower compared with the maximal abundance of thrips in rye during the same period. The abundance and development of thrips depended on the weather conditions. Warm weather promoted the occurence of thrips, while cool weather suppressed their occurence. Prolonged droughts accelerated maturation of cereals and inhibited the occurence of thrips in winter rye.
