Tectonic development of the Rukwa Rift Basin in SW Tanzania

Das seismisch aktive Rukwa Rift ist Teil des westlichen Arms des ostafrikanischen Riftsystems (OARS). Wegen seiner, verglichen mit den meisten Riftbecken des OARS, abweichenden räumlichen Orientierung wurde der Entwicklung des Rukwa Riftes in jüngster Zeit verstärkte Aufmerksamkeit, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Extensionsrichtung gewidmet. Die Tanganyika-Rukwa-Malawi-Störungszone wurde vielfach als kontinentale Transform-Störung gedeutet, und die Extension des Rukwa-Beckens normal zum Streichen wurde als minimal interpretiert. Die Subsidenz und Hebungsgeschichte des Rukwa-Beckens wurde in dieser Arbeit durch Satellitenbildauswertung, durch Interpretation von gravimetrischen und reflexionsseismischen Daten sowie mittels Strukturdaten (vorwiegend kinematische Indikatoren) von Störungen im flankierenden Grundgebirge und dem sedimentären Beckeninhalt rekonstruiert. Apatit-Spaltspurendatierungen ermöglichten eine zeitliche Einordnung der mechanischen Abläufe. Eine Analyse der Subsidenzkurven der Ivuna-Bohrung ergab weitere Indizien zur tektonischen Geschichte des Beckens. Die Paläo- und Rezentmorphologie sowie die Freiluft-Schwereanomalie wurden mittels kinematischer und isostatischer Modelle simuliert und daraus die Extension, Erosion und die mechanischen Eigenschaften des Beckens ermittelt. Horizontale Scherbewegungen, wie sie vielfach von früheren Bearbeitern postuliert wurden, haben bei der Entwicklung des Rukwa Beckens eine wichtige, aber keineswegs dominierende Rolle gespielt. Blattverschiebungen waren vermutlich während des Karoo und im Verlauf der jüngsten Entwicklungsphase wirksam, während die jurassisch-kretazische und jungtertiäre Tektonik und Sedimentation eher Folge lithosphärischer Dehnungsspannungen waren. Apatit-Spaltspurendatierungen zeigten, daß mehr als 3 km Gestein von den Flanken des Rukwa-Beckens seit dem Karoo abgetragen wurden. Die an den Grundgebirgsgesteinen der Beckenflanken gemessenen kinematischen Indikatoren, die vielfach als Argument für jungtertiäre Öffnungsvorgänge parallel zum Beckenstreichen dienten, sind jünger als die präkambrische duktile Deformation des Grundgebirges. Sie können aber ebenso kretazische, jurassische oder Bewegungsvorgänge des Karoo reflektieren. Berechnungen haben gezeigt, daß während der jungkänozoischen Riftphase die Extension normal zum Beckenstreichen beträchtlich größer war als parallel zum Becken, was gegen ein Blattverschiebungsmodell des Rukwa Beckens spricht.

The seismically active Rukwa Rift, is part of the western branch of the East African Rift System (EARS). The development of this rift has in the recent years been a subject of great interest, partially because of its unique orientation relative to the rest of the EARS and its role on the past and present stress patterns within the African plate. Opinion of different authors with regard to its extension direction differs, probably due to lack of systematic observational constraints. Previous investigations have mainly been based on Landsat interpretations with little field observations. The Tanganyika-Rukwa-Malawi fault zone which embraces the Rukwa Rift has been viewed as an intracontinental transform fault zone, which during late Cenozoic rifting has been opening under high angle wrench faulting with little extension across the basin. In this study the mechanics of Rukwa Basin development is examined by assessing its subsidence and uplift history. This has been accomplished through the analysis of Landsat images, gravity, reflection seismic data and field observations of faults and kinematic indicators on the basin flanking basement rocks and within the basin. Interpretations of kinematic indicators of faults within the basin-filling strata plus the apatite fission track dating of basin flanking basement rocks have been vital in constraining the chronology of the faulting events. The tectonic history of the basin is inferred from the analysis of subsidence curves of Ivuna Well, drilled within the basin. Finally, basin modelling using the simple kinematic and isostatic model of lithospheric extension, helped to simulate the past and present morphology and free air gravity anomalies across the basin. Through this simulation the extension, erosion and the mechanical strength of this narrow rift basin is explained. This integrated study has allowed the development model of this rift basin to be quantitatively assessed and eliminate models based on one method alone like those used by previous workers. While horizontal movements may have played a role in the evolution of Rukwa Basin as suggested by previous workers, it has not been the only or the major force throughout the evolutional history. Results of the present study suggest that strike slip movements were probably more active during Karoo time and in the later part of the Late Cenozoic rifting. The Late Jurassic/Cretaceous and Late Tertiary sedimentation in this basin have been controlled by a tensional stress regime. Apatite fission track analysis results reveal that more than 3 km of rock materials have been gradually removed from the top of the present flanks of Rukwa Basin since Karoo time. This implies that the kinematic indicators observed on the rift flanking basement rocks, though often used to confirm the along basin opening of the Rukwa-Tanganyika-Malawi fault zone in the Late Tertiary, certainly postdate the ductile basement metamorphism. They may, however, represent Karoo, Jurassic/Cretaceous, Late Tertiary or even the latest movements in this basin. Extension calculations suggest that during Late Cenozoic rifting the amount of extension has been more across the basin than along the basin which is in contrast to a wrench fault model of basin development.
