CONDICIONES HIDROQUÍMICAS DEL SACO DE LA ISLA DE COCHE, VENEZUELA. MAYO 1989 – MAYO 1990

RESUMEN:Se hizo un estudio de las condiciones hidroquímicas imperantes en El Saco, Isla de Coche, desde mayo de 1989 hasta mayo de 1990, mediante observaciones y determinaciones quincenales, en superficie y fondo, de las variables temperatura, salinidad, oxígeno disuelto, nutrientes inorgánicos, clorofila “a”, feopigmentos, materia en suspensión y productividad primaria. Entre las características físico-químicas observadas destacaron el patrón estacional de la temperatura, la poca variación de la salinidad, la homogeneidad vertical, la alta concentración de oxígeno, la irregularidad en la fluctuación de los elementos nutritivos y la moderada productividad primaria. La temperatura varió entre 22,5 y 29,9 oC, observándose los mayores niveles en el periodo julio-noviembre y los menores en diciembre-abril. La salinidad fluctuó entre 35,99 y 38,23. La concentración de oxígeno disuelto osciló entre 0 y 5,29 ml.l-1. Los contenidos de nutrientes fueron muy variables con ascensos y descensos alternantes. El nutriente más abundante fue el amonio. Los nitratos, fosfatos y nitritos presentaron baja concentración. Las fluctuaciones de los nutrientes inorgánicos podrían estar reguladas en mayor o menor grado por los procesos de asimilación, oxidación, descomposición de la materia orgánica, intercambio con los sedimentos, corrientes de marea, y por los procesos advectivos y la circulación local. La clorofila “a” varió entre 0 y 14,42 mg.m-3. La producción primaria fue inferior a la observada en ambientes lagunares costeros del área y osciló entre 14,71 y 310,11 mgCm-3día-1. No se observó correlación entre las concentraciones de los nutrientes y la productividad primaria, lo cual parece indicar que ésta es regulada por otros factores. La materia en suspensión fue elevada con predominio de los materiales inorgánicos y fluctuó entre 16,6 y 136,8 mg.l-1. ABSTRACT: Hydrochemical conditions of El Saco, Coche Island, are described based on samples taken biweekly at six stations from May 1989 to May 1990. Surface and near bottom water samples were analyzed for salinity, dissolved oxygen, inorganic nutrients, chlorophyll “a”, phaeopigments, particulate materials and primary production. In addition, temperature and transparency (Secchi disk) were measured at each station. Some remarkable characteristics during the sampling period were the seasonal pattern of temperature change, the restricted fluctuation in salinity, the homogeneity of the water column, the high dissolved oxygen concentrations, and the high variability of the inorganic nutrients. Except for the oxygen concentration and particulate materials, all other variables showed vertical homogeneity during the study period. Variation of hydrochemical conditions showed the same seasonal pattern in all stations. Temperature ranged between 22.5 and 29.9 oC. Highest temperatures occurred between July and November; the lowest occurred from December to April. Salinity fluctuated little and varied from 35.99 to 38.23. Dissolved oxygen fluctuated between 0 and 5.29 ml.l-1. Ammonia was the most abundant nutrient, while nitrates, phosphates and nitrites were present in low concentration. Inorganic nutrient concentrations could be influenced by assimilation, oxidation, organic matter degradation, exchange with sediments, tides, and other physical processes. Chlorophill “a” varied between 0 and 14.42 mg.m-3. Primary production was lower than that cited for coastal lagoons of Margarita Island, and had values of 14.71 to 310.11 mgCm-3día-1. No correlation was observed between the nutrient concentrations and primary production, which may indicate that production is regulated by other factors. Particulate material was high, ranging from 16.6 to 136.8 mg.l-1. Inorganic materials predominated over the organic ones.
