Indicação geográfica do mel de aroeira do Norte de Minas: um relato de experiência

Beekeeping in the North of Minas Gerais has become an important source of income for family farmers. The organization of beekeepers in associations and cooperatives explains this advance, with gains in productivity, quality, and marketing of products. One of the highlights of production in the North of Minas Gerais is the dark honey with medicinal properties from the aroeira-do-sertão tree (Astronium urundeuva) (Anacardiaceae). Preserving this species and its ecosystem is necessary. The present study aims to demonstrate the importance of the geographical indication to produce aroeira-do-sertão honey in the North of Minas Gerais. A bibliographical survey and the practical, theoretical, and professional experience of beekeepers were used as the basis for this study. The recognition of aroeira honey from the North of Minas Gerais, through the Geographical Indication, was important in giving notoriety, recognition, and value to the regional product. This honey received the Geographical Indication registration and the Type of Denomination of Origin granted by the National Institute of Industrial Property, in 2022. These registrations mark a new chapter in the production of this typical honey from the region, which was once one of the most undervalued honeys, adding value in economic, social, and environmental spheres.
