Romero, Daniela Andrea
The design and implementation of a virtual field trip (VFT) to the Sandfell Laccolith ineastern Iceland is presented here. The VFT is built with a 3D model and geospatial data onthe web hosted platform Cesium Ion Stories. The high resolution 3D model is made usingphotogram-metry techniques with high quality drone images with the software AgisoftMetashape. Cesium Ion Stories is an interactive environment where students can virtuallyexplore and interpret the geological processes presented in the VFT. In an in-classroom,teacher led setting, the VFT incorporates discussion and sketching activities to develop anunderstanding of the geological processes of the location. The VFT assesses students’ grasp ofthe learning outcomes by as-signed a creative based task, along with discussion sessions, toshow the chronological order of the development of formations. The goal of this VFT is toreplicate a field course to address the challenge of accessibility in geoscience education.
