Ten M8 generation lines of NSIC Rc160 and NSIC Rc216 treated with gamma radiation at Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) were evaluated under rainfield lowland condition together with the wild types (NSIC Rc160 and NSIC Rc216) and checks (IR64, NSIC Rc192 and NSIC Rc222) to; (1) evaluate the agronomic traits of mutant lines under rainfield lowland ecosystem, (2) to determine the grain physical attributes and milling potential of mutant lines, and (3) to identify superior mutant lines in terms of drought tolerance and grain yield. The results of the study revealed significant variations on some agronomic traits gathered among the mutant lines, wild types and checks. The following parameters showed highly significant variation: days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height (cm), spikelet fertility (%), seed settings (%), and grain yield (t/ha). Panicle length (cm), number of filled spikelets, and unfilled spikelets were shown to be significant while productive tillers, half-filled spikelets, total number of spikelets per panicle and 1000 grain weight (g) had no significant variation observed. Based on 12 agronomic traits, all mutant lines of NSIC Rc160 and NSIC Rc216 were observed to be comparable to their wild type except days to flowering and panicle length. Highest grain yield was obtained from mutant lines 603C (4.67 t/ha) and 301B (4.63 t/ha) which surpassed the yield of high yielding check (4.34t/ha). Three mutant lines each from NSIC Rc216 (603C, 301B, 226A) and NSIC Rc160 (307B, 435A, 479C) were chosen, yielding 4.1 to 4.67 t/ha. Comparable to the high-yield check (4.34 t/ha), they exhibited over 10% advantage against NSIC Rc160 (3.65 t/ha) and drought-tolerant check NSIC Rc192 (3.75 t/ha). These promising mutants are recommended for advancement in the Advance Yield Trial (AYT) assessment.
