The examination of the physical development of Sjenica sheep on the basis of morphometric parameters included a total of 21 sheep from three farms based in the region Raska. Morphometric parameters were determined by measuring sheep with a ribbon, and welfare assessment was based on a survey, inspection of the herd and assessment of the condition of the sheep in each individual herd. The results obtained were statistically processed using the software package Prism Pad 6.0. The results of morphometric evaluations showed that Sjenica sheep in all three farms were phenotypically developed in accordance with the breed standard and the data from the literature. The condition of the sheep was good (grade 3), obese or very obese, which reveals an overdose of concentrated nutrients. Presence of lameness in ewes (over 80%), then random antiparasitic treatments and stable hygiene indicate that sheep welfare conditions need to be improved. The SWOT analysis reveals that the advantages and possibilities for expanding the breeding of Sjenica sheep are based on the adaptive chara cteristics and resistance characteristics as well as on tradition, and that the process of preserving the indigenous gene pool is endangered by insufficiently controlled crossbreeding and depopulation of villages. Based on the performed research, it can be concluded that it is necessary to continue the studies and research of the autochthonous Sjenica Zackel type with very careful selection planning in order to reduce crossbreeding. It is also necessary to provide condi tions for improving the knowledge of breeders in order to improve the welfare of sheep and farm management.
