Politiques de backlash et développement durable en Amérique latine
2025
Tomazini, Carla (ed.) | Grisa, Catia (ed.) | Le Coq, Jean-François (ed.)
This special issue explores the intersection of backlash politics and sustainable development, in Latin America. Across the region, backlash movements have increasingly opposed global initiatives such as the UN's 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), often framing them as threats to national sovereignty, traditional values, and cultural identity. Drawing on empirical case studies from Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Guatemala, the contributions examine how backlash actors mobilize against international norms, human rights, environmental regulations, and gender equality policies. Using the analytical framework of ideas, interests, and institutions, the articles unpack the mechanisms through which backlash politics disrupt sustainable development trajectories. The studies explore processes such as policy dismantling, conservative institutional activism, and the strategic use of disinformation and conspiracy theories. Rather than viewing backlash as a mere reaction, the articles reveal it as a deliberate and forward-looking reconfiguration of governance and policymaking. Ultimately, the special issue advocates for an empirical approach to studying backlash politics and calls for a renewed research agenda that connects Latin American experiences to broader global patterns. It underscores the urgency of understanding both resistance to progressive agendas and the responses they provoke in order to safeguard democratic values and advance inclusive, sustainable development.
