Über die Vegetationsverhältnisse der Insel Fehmarn | About the vegetation conditions on the island of Fehmarn

Die vorliegende Arbeit basiert auf vegetationskundlichen Erhebungen auf der Insel Fehmarn in den Jahren 1946 und 1947. Unter Anwendung der in Mitteleuropa bewährten pflanzensoziologischen Methoden – insbesondere der Schweizer Schule – wurde die Zusammensetzung und Struktur der Vegetation dokumentiert und analysiert. Die floristische Analyse erfolgte unter Berücksichtigung von Abundanz, Dominanz, Soziabilität sowie ökologischen und topografischen Faktoren. Ein zentrales Ziel war die Entwicklung eines objektiven Kriteriums zur Bestimmung der Homogenität pflanzensoziologischer Einheiten durch die Einführung des Begriffs der „charakteristischen Artenkombination“. Darüber hinaus wird die Problematik systematischer Klassifikation thematisiert, insbesondere die künstliche Natur solcher Systeme und die Vorsicht im Umgang mit prioritätsbasierten Namensgebungen. Die Studie liefert wertvolle Erkenntnisse zur floristischen Struktur und Einordnung der Vegetation Fehmarns im Kontext mitteleuropäischer Pflanzengesellschaften.

This study is based on vegetation surveys conducted on the island of Fehmarn in 1946 and 1947. Using phytosociological methods established in Central Europe—particularly those of the Swiss school—the composition and structure of the island’s vegetation were documented and analyzed. The floristic analysis included assessments of abundance, dominance, sociability, and ecological as well as topographical factors. A central objective was to develop an objective criterion for determining the homogeneity of plant sociological units through the introduction of the concept of the “characteristic species combination.” The work also discusses the challenges of systematic classification, emphasizing the artificial nature of such systems and cautioning against rigid, priority-based nomenclature. The study provides valuable insights into the floristic structure and classification of Fehmarn’s vegetation in the context of Central European plant communities.
