Factores que influyen en la diversidad taxonómica y funcional de aves en un paisaje dominado por café en la Sierra de Apaneca en El Salvador

.El presente estudio busca contribuir al conocimiento de los factores que influyen en la diversidad taxonómica y funcional de las aves. El estudio se realizó en la Reserva de la Biosfera Apaneca-Ilamatepec dentro de la Sierra de Apaneca en El Salvador. Se muestrearon un total de 21 sitios, 13 fincas de café simplificado (CS) que corresponden a fincas con sombra dominada por la especie Inga spp. y policultivos simples; cinco fincas de café diverso (CD) que corresponden a fincas con diversas especies de sombra, y tres parches de bosque (PB). Los sistemas agroforestales evaluados resultaron importantes para la diversidad de aves migratorias Neotropicales, debido a la similar proporción de estas especies en comparación a los parches de bosque, especialmente durante la época seca. Los puntos de observación de aves con mayor complejidad estructural y diversidad florística se relacionaron positivamente con los atributos de la comunidad de aves, incluyendo los índices de diversidad funcional como riqueza funcional (FRic) y equidad funcional (FEve). De los seis tipos funcionales (TF) identificados en las comunidades de aves, cuatro de ellos (TF1, TF2, TF4 y TF5) estuvieron asociados a los parches de bosque al ser ponderados por el número de especies de aves, a diferencia de las plantaciones de café donde estuvieron asociados pocos grupos (TF3 y TF6. Se concluye que en la RBAI los cafetales son hábitats importantes para las aves residentes y migratorias generalistas de bosque y TF con hábitos alimenticios menos; sin embargo, la asociación de TF5 en cafetales diversos resalta la importancia de mantener sistemas agroforestales con mayor diversidad florística.

The present study contributes to the knowledge on the factors that influence the taxonomic and functional diversity of birds. This study was carried out in the Apaneca-Ilamatepec Biosphere reserve (RBAI) of the Sierra de Apaneca. A total of 21 sites were sampled; 13 farms of simplified coffee (CS); coffee plantations dominated by Ingas and simple polyculture, five farms of diversified coffee (CD); coffee plantations with varied shade trees, and three forest fragments (PB). Bird data was collected in 102 point counts using 25m fixed-radius distributed at all sites, in two different seasons (season I/dry season=February to April; season II/early rain season=May to June). The evaluated agroforestry systems were important for Neotropical migratory bird species, due to the similar number of these bird species with forest fragments, especially in the dry season. The point counts where vegetation was structurally complex and floristically diverse had higher levels of bird species richness, abundance and diversity, and higher scores for functional richness (FRic) and functional evenness (FEve). We conclude that coffee plantations in RBAI are important habitats for resident and migratory birds from mainly generalist and less specialized feeding groups; however, the association of TF5 to diversified coffee highlights the importance of maintaining agroforestry systems with diverse shade vegetation. We recommend diversifying structurally and floristically the coffee plantations, considering all those tree species that are attractive for birds and may provide options for foraging and refuge.
