Information on exposure levels to organochlorine compounds (OCs) in child population is limited, despite their greater vulnerability to the adverse health effects of these chemicals. To determine serum concentrations of 10 OCs (including organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls –PCBs–) in children living in agricultural communities from Almería (South-Eastern Spain), and to identify the main predictors of exposure related to socio-economic characteristics, diet and lifestyle.A cross-sectional study was conducted on 133 children aged 6–11 years selected from public schools of the study area. OCs compounds were determined in serum samples by GC/ECD. Anthropometric measures were obtained during sample collection. Information on sociodemographic characteristics, parental occupation, residential history, lifestyle and frequency of food consumption, among other relevant factors, was obtained by questionnaires administered to the mothers.Geometric means of serum concentrations (ng/ml) were 0.11 for β-hexachloro-cyclohexane (β-HCH), 0.09 for endosulfan, 0.20 for endosulfan-ether, 0.51 for hexachorobenzene (HCB), 0.08 for mirex, 0.06 for oxychlordane, 0.36 for p,p'-DDE, 0.20 for PCB 138, 0.36 for PCB 153, and 0.45 for PCB 180. Percentage of samples above the limit of detection (0.05 ppb) ranged from 32 (β-HCH) to 100 (HCB). A high variability in OC levels depending on the compound was observed between our results and others found in similar studies carried out in children. Variables related to fish consumption were found to be the major dietary determinant of PCB 138, p,p´-DDE, endosulfan-α, β-HCH, mirex and oxychlordane levels.Children participating in this study showed detectable levels of many OC, despite these compounds are no longer used. Their presence in children serum can be explained by their high lipophilicity and environmental persistence, leading to contamination of fatty food. In this line, fish consumption seemed to be the most relevant determinant of OC levels found in our study.

Ziou, D. | Kerouh, F.
The concept of the smart city raised several technological and scientific issues including light pollution. There are various negative impacts of light pollution on economy, ecology, and heath. This paper deals with the census of the colour of light emitted by lamps used in a city environment. To this end, we derive a light bulb colour estimator based on Bayesian reasoning, directional data, and image formation model in which the usual concept of reflectance is not used. All choices we made are devoted to designing an algorithm which can be run almost in real-time. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Triclosan (TCS) is an organic compound with a wide range of antibiotic activity and has been widely used in items ranging from hygiene products to cosmetics; however, recent studies suggest that it has several adverse effects. In particular, TCS can be passed to both fetus and infants, and while some evidence suggests in vitro neurotoxicity, there are currently few studies concerning the mechanisms of TCS-induced developmental neurotoxicity. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the effect of TCS on neural development using zebrafish models, by analyzing the morphological changes, the alterations observed in fluorescence using HuC-GFP and Olig2-dsRED transgenic zebrafish models, and neurodevelopmental gene expression. TCS exposure decreased the body length, head size, and eye size in a concentration-dependent manner in zebrafish embryos. It increased apoptosis in the central nervous system (CNS) and particularly affected the structure of the CNS, resulting in decreased synaptic density and shortened axon length. In addition, it significantly up-regulated the expression of genes related to axon extension and synapse formation such as α1-Tubulin and Gap43, while decreasing Gfap and Mbp related to axon guidance, myelination and maintenance. Collectively, these changes indicate that exposure to TCS during neurodevelopment, especially during axonogenesis, is toxic. This is the first study to demonstrate the toxicity of TCS during neurogenesis, and suggests a possible mechanism underlying the neurotoxic effects of TCS in developing vertebrates.

Traffic noise stresses and disturbs sleep. It has been associated with various diseases, and has recently also been associated with lifestyle. Hence, the association between traffic noise and disease could partly operate via a pathway of lifestyle habits, including smoking and alcohol intake. We investigated associations between modelled residential traffic noise and smoking habits and alcohol consumption. In a cohort of 57,053 participants, we performed cross-sectional analyses using data from a baseline questionnaire (1993-97), and longitudinal analyses of change between baseline and follow-up (2000-02). Smoking status (never, former, current) and intensity (tobacco, g/day) and alcohol consumption (g/day) was self-reported at baseline and follow-up. Address history from 1987-2002 for all participants were found in national registries, and road traffic and railway noise was modelled 1 and 5 years before enrolment, and from baseline to follow-up. Analyses were performed using logistic and linear regression, and adjusted for demographics, socioeconomic variables, leisure-time sports, and noise from the opposite source (road/railway).Road traffic noise exposure 5 years before baseline was positively associated with alcohol consumption (adjusted difference per 10 dB: 1.38 g/day, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.10–1.65), smoking intensity (adjusted difference per 10 dB: 0.40 g/day, 95% CI: 0.19–0.61), and odds for being a current vs. never/former smoker at baseline (odds ratio (OR): 1.14; 95% CI: 1.10–1.17). In longitudinal analyses, we found no association between road traffic noise and change in smoking and alcohol habits. Railway noise was not associated with smoking habits and alcohol consumption, neither in cross-sectional nor in longitudinal analyses. The study suggests that long-term exposure to residential road traffic is associated with smoking habits and alcohol consumption, albeit only in cross-sectional, but not in longitudinal analyses.

The stomatal compensation point of ammonia (χs) is a key factor controlling plant-atmosphere NH3 exchange, which is dependent on the nitrogen (N) supply and varies among plant species. However, knowledge gaps remain concerning the effects of elevated atmospheric N deposition and ozone (O3) on χs for forest species, resulting in large uncertainties in the parameterizations of NH3 incorporated into atmospheric chemistry and transport models (CTMs). Here, we present leaf-scale measurements of χs for hybrid poplar clone ‘546’ (Populusdeltoides cv. 55/56 x P. deltoides cv. Imperial) growing in two N treatments (N0, no N added; N50, 50 kg N ha−1 yr−1 urea fertilizer added) and two O3 treatments (CF, charcoal-filtered air; E-O3, non-filtered air plus 40 ppb) for 105 days. Our results showed that χs was significantly reduced by E-O3 (41%) and elevated N (19%). The interaction of N and O3 was significant, and N can mitigate the negative effects of O3 on χs. Elevated O3 significantly reduced the light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Asat) and chlorophyll (Chl) content and significantly increased intercellular CO2 concentrations (Ci), but had no significant effect on stomatal conductance (gs). By contrast, elevated N did not significantly affect all measured photosynthetic parameters. Overall, χs was significantly and positively correlated with Asat, gs and Chl, whereas a significant and negative relationship was observed between χs and Ci. Our results suggest that O3-induced changes in Asat, Ci and Chl may affect χs. Our findings provide a scientific basis for optimizing parameterizations of χs in CTMs in response to environmental change factors (i.e., elevated N deposition and/or O3) in the future.

Iodination of dissolved organic matter (DOM) initiated by manganese oxide may represent an important source of organoiodine compounds (OICs) for iodide-containing waters. Here, Suwannee River natural organic matter was selected as model DOM, the OICs formation in simulated freshwater samples from iodinated DOM induced by manganese oxide (δ-MnO2) was investigated at different pHs and concentrations of iodide and δ-MnO2 by using negative ion electrospray ionization coupled with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FT-ICR MS). While no OIC was observed in DOM control samples without δ-MnO2, hundreds of OICs were detected in the presence of δ-MnO2, suggesting the enhanced role of δ-MnO2 played in DOM iodination. The relative abundance was defined as the value of dividing the peak intensity of OICs by the highest m/z peak intensity constantly occurred in each mass spectrum, and selected as a parameter for partly reflecting the real level of OICs. The relative abundance of most OICs were around or greater than 1%, and several OICs with higher relative abundance were identified as diiodo-5-hydroxy-4-cyclopentene-1,3-dione, diiodomethane and diiodoacetic acid. The numbers of the formed OICs increased with the increase concentrations of iodide/δ-MnO2 and the decrease of pH, and nearly all OICs formed at lower levels of iodide/δ-MnO2 and/or higher pH were overlapped by that at higher levels of iodide/δ-MnO2 and/or lower pH, indicating the reliability of FT-ICR MS analysis techniques and data processing method. The OICs were formed mainly from the iodination of typical lignin-like and tannin-like compounds, as well as the precursor compounds with higher relative abundance through substitution reactions. Our findings demonstrate that the OICs formation by δ-MnO2-initiated DOM iodination should receive more attention and the concentration, exact structure and toxicity of the OICs need to be further investigated.

Microplastic (MP) are environmental pollutants and have the potential to cause varying degrees of aquatic toxicity. In this study, the effects on gut microbiota of adult male zebrafish exposed for 14 days to 100 and 1000 μg/L of two sizes of polystyrene MP were evaluated. Both 0.5 and 50 μm-diameter spherical polystyrene MP increased the volume of mucus in the gut at a concentration of 1000 μg/L (about 1.456 × 10¹⁰ particles/L for 0.5 μm and 1.456 × 10⁴ particles/L for 50 μm). At the phylum level, the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria decreased significantly and the abundance of Firmicutes increased significantly in the gut after 14-day exposure to 1000 μg/L of both sizes of polystyrene MP. In addition, high throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 region revealed a significant change in the richness and diversity of microbiota in the gut of polystyrene MP-exposed zebrafish. A more in depth analysis, at the genus level, revealed that a total of 29 gut microbes identified by operational taxonomic unit (OTU) analysis were significantly changed in both 0.5 and 50 μm-diameter polystyrene MP-treated groups. Moreover, it was observed that 0.5 μm polystyrene MP not only increased mRNA levels of IL1α, IL1β and IFN but also their protein levels in the gut, indicating that inflammation occurred after polystyrene MP exposure. Our findings suggest that polystyrene MP could induce microbiota dysbiosis and inflammation in the gut of adult zebrafish.

2018
Kibblewhite, M.G.
Highways are major, open and dynamic sources of contaminants that present a risk to adjacent agricultural soils. Urban and peri-urban soils are particularly at risk because of a greater density of nearby highways with high traffic volumes. In developing economies, these soils support valuable food production and income, while in more developed economies there is a growing interest in urban food production. This commentary highlights the need to better characterise the sources, pathways to and impacts of highway contaminants on agricultural soils and it suggests research priorities. Soil contamination from highways includes metals, toxic organic pollutants and plastics (including large amounts of tyre dust). Contaminants from vehicle emissions and from wear of vehicles and highways are transferred to soil in airborne particulates, dust, splash, spray and runoff. Contamination is greatest near to the highway edge but can extend to >50m. Levels of metals including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn in some soils adjacent to highways may exceed thresholds above which there is a potential risk of harm to food production. Elevated levels of non-threshold carcinogens (e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) in soil adjacent to highways are widely reported, with significant attribution to highway emissions. Mitigation options include improved vehicle design and performance, porous asphalt pavements, physical and vegetative barriers and better drainage. Research priorities include: (1) targeted soil monitoring to identify where highway contamination already presents a significant risk of harm to food production and to identify and assess trends in response to mitigation measures; (2) studies to assess the role of tyre particulate in transporting and releasing contaminants that are hazardous to soil (3) assessment of the risk to soil from pesticides used in highway maintenance; (4) analysis to inform a new emphasis on controlling soil pollution by innovative highway design and maintenance.

This study characterized the effect of the metal(loid)-resistant bacteria Ralstonia eutropha Q2-8 and Exiguobacterium aurantiacum Q3-11 on Cd and As accumulation in wheat grown in Cd- and As-polluted soils (1 mg kg−1 of Cd + 40 mg kg−1 of As and 2 mg kg−1 of Cd + 60 mg kg−1 of As). The influence of strains Q2-8 and Q3-11 on water-soluble Cd and As and NH4+concentration and pH in the soil filtrate were also analyzed. Inoculation with these strains significantly reduced wheat plant Cd (12–32%) and As (9–29%) uptake and available Cd (15–28%) and As (22–38%) contents in rhizosphere soils compared to the controls. Furthermore, these strains significantly increased the relative abundances of the arsM bacterial As metabolism gene and of Fe- and Mn-oxidizing Leptothrix species in rhizosphere soils. Notably, these strains significantly reduced water-soluble Cd and As concentrations and increased pH and NH4+ concentration in the soil filtrate. These results suggest that these strains increased soil pH and the abundance of genes possibly involved in metal(loid) unavailability, resulting in reduced wheat Cd and As accumulation and highlight the possibility of using bacteria for in situ remediation and safe production of wheat or other food crops in metal(loid)-polluted soils.

Zhang, Ze-Ming | Zhang, Hong-Hai | Zou, Ya-Wen | Yang, Gui-Peng
The spatial distribution, chemical composition and ecological risk of 16 phthalate esters (PAEs) were investigated in the sea-surface microlayer (SML), seawater and sediment samples of the Bohai Sea (BS) and the Yellow Sea (YS). The concentration levels of the ΣPAEs spanned a range of 449–13441 ng L−1 in the SML, 453–5108 ng L−1 in seawater, and 1.24–15.8 mg kg−1 in the sediment samples, respectively, with diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) as the dominant PAEs in both the water and sediment samples. The concentrations of ΣPAEs in the BS were higher than those in the YS. The vertical distribution of ΣPAEs in the water column showed that the concentrations were higher in the surface waters, but decreased slightly with depth, and started to increase at the bottom. Additionally, PAEs were significantly enriched in the SML, with an average enrichment factor of 1.46. The ecological risk of the PAEs was evaluated by the risk quotient (RQ) method, which indicated that DEHP posed a high risk to aquatic organisms in the whole water-phase, while the RQ values of DBP and DiBP reached a high risk levels in sedimentary environment.
