Settling troubles have been identified on rotative biological contactor. Vertical flow treatment wetlands show the best performances. Coefficient Of Reliability use and comparison with data from Brazil confirm those results.

This study focuses on the fate of phosphorus (P) in 2 pilot-scale CWtw after 2 years of operation considering the 3 components: water, soil and plants. P mass balance was estimated by measures of water balance (inflow outflow and infiltration), flow composite samples, grab samples, water in soil, deposits, soil and plants samples. When considering inlet/outlet an efficiency of 83% and 39 % P removal was observed respectively in M1 and M2. Since the plant uptake was of 15-25 % of total P removal in both systems, the remaining fraction was either retained in the soil or infiltrated. Removal of P by harvesting of aboveground biomass is relevant in that case because of a lightly load system and confirms the need for a harvesting per year to avoid the release of up to 7 kg of P.

The applicability of radon (222Rn) measurements to delineate non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) contamination in subsoil is discussed at a site with lithological discontinuities through a blind test. Three alpha spectroscopy monitors were used to measure radon in soil air in a 25,000-m2 area, following a regular sampling design with a 20-m2 grid. Repeatability and reproducibility of the results were assessed by means of duplicate measurements in six sampling positions. Furthermore, three points not affected by oil spills were sampled to estimate radon background concentration in soil air. Data histograms, Q-Q plots, variograms, and cluster analysis allowed to recognize two data populations, associated with the possible path of a fault and a lithological discontinuity. Even though the concentration of radon in soil air was dominated by this discontinuity, the characterization of the background emanation in each lithological unit allowed to distinguish areas potentially affected by NAPL, thus justifying the application of radon emanometry as a screening technique for the delineation of NAPL plumes in sites with lithological discontinuities.

The bioremediation of historic industrial contaminated sites is a complex process. Co-contamination, often with lead which was commonly added to gasoline until 16 years ago is one of the biggest challenges affecting the clean-up of these sites. In this study, the effect of heavy metals, as co-contaminant, together with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) is reported, in terms of remaining soil toxicity and the structure of the microbial communities. Contaminated soil samples from a relatively hot and dry climate in Western Australia were collected (n = 27). Analysis of soils showed the presence of both contaminants, TPHs and heavy metals. The Microtox test confirmed that their co-presence elevated the remaining ecotoxicity. Toxicity was correlated with the presence of lead, zinc and TPH (0.893, 0.599 and 0.488), respectively, assessed using Pearson Correlation coefficient factor. Next Generation Sequencing of soil bacterial 16S rRNA, revealed a lack of dominate genera; however, despite the variation in soil type, a few genera including Azospirillum spp. and Conexibacter were present in most soil samples (85% and 82% of all soils, respectively). Likewise, many genera of hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were identified in all soil samples. Streptomyces spp. was presented in 93% of the samples with abundance between 7% and 40%. In contrast, Acinetobacter spp. was found in only one sample but was a dominant member of (45%) of the microbial community. In addition, some bacterial genera were correlated to the presence of the heavy metals, such as Geodermatophilus spp., Rhodovibrio spp. and Rubrobacter spp. which were correlated with copper, lead and zinc, respectively. This study concludes that TPH and heavy metal co-contamination significantly elevated the associated toxicity. This is an important consideration when carrying out risk assessment associated with natural attenuation. This study also improves knowledge about the dynamics of microbial communities in mixed contamination scenarios.

Rising prevalence of cardiovascular disease requires in-depth understanding of predisposing factors. Studies show an association between air pollution and CVD but this association is not well documented in southern Nigeria where the use of biomass fuels (BMF) for domestic purposes is prevalent.This study aimed to explore the association between household BMF use and blood pressure (BP) and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) among rural-dwelling women.A cross-sectional study of 389 women aged 18 years and older. Questionnaires were used to obtain data on predominant fuel used and a brief medical history. Wood, charcoal and agricultural waste were classified as BMF while kerosene, bottled gas and electricity were classified as non-BMF. Blood pressure and CIMT were measured using standard protocols. Regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between fuel type and BP, CIMT, pre-hypertension and hypertension after adjusting for confounders.There was a significant difference in the mean (standard deviation) systolic BP (135.3, 26.7 mmHg vs 123.8, 22.6 mmHg; p < 0.01), diastolic BP (83.7, 18.5 mmHg vs 80.1, 13.8 mmHg; p = 0.043) and CIMT (0.63, 0.16 mm vs 0.56, 0.14 mm; p = 0.004) among BMF users compared to non-BMF users. In regression analysis, the use of BMF was significantly associated with 2.7 mmHg higher systolic BP (p = 0.040), 0.04 mm higher CIMT (p = 0.048) in addition to increased odds of pre-hypertension (OR 1.67 95% CI 1.56, 4.99, P = 0.035) but not hypertension (OR 1.23 95% CI 0.73, 2.07, P = 0.440).In this population, there was a significant association between BMF use and increased SBP, CIMT and pre-hypertension. This requires further exploration with a large-scale longitudinal study design because there are policy implications for countries like Nigeria where a large proportion of the population still rely on BMF for domestic energy.

The main objective of this study was to assess the uptake and translocation of MnFe₂O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in hydroponically grown barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Hydrothermally synthesized and well characterized MNPs (average crystallite size of 14.5 ± 0.5 nm) with varied doses (62.5, 125, 250, 500, and 1000 mg L⁻¹) were subjected to the plants at germination and early growing stages (three weeks). The tissues analyzed by vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the uptake and translocation of MNPs, as well as their internalization in the leaf cells. Also, elemental analysis proved that manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) contents were ∼7–9 times and ∼4–7 times higher in the leaves of MNPs-treated plants than the ones for non-treated control, respectively. 250 mg L⁻¹ of MNPs significantly (at least p < 0.05) promoted the fresh weight (FW, %10.25). However, higher concentrations (500 and 1000 mg L⁻¹) remarkably reduced the increase to %8 and %5, respectively, possibly due to the restricted water uptake. Also, catalase activity was increased from 91 (μM H₂O₂ min⁻¹ mg⁻¹) to 138 in leaves, and decreased to 66 in roots upon 1000 mg L⁻¹ of MNPs application. Chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were not significantly changed, except chlorophyll a (%6 increase at 1000 mg L⁻¹, p < 0.05). Overall, MnFe₂O₄ NPs were up-taken from the roots and migrated to the leaves which promoted the growth parameters of barley. Hence, MNPs can be suggested for barley breeding programs and can be proposed as effective delivery system for agrochemicals. However, the possible negative effect of MNPs due to its potential horizontal transfer from plants to animals via the food chain must be also considered.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of cooking and in vitro human digestion on the changes of five insecticides—fipronil, bifenthrin, 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT), 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDD), and 2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dichloroethylene (DDE)—in egg whites and yolks. Each insecticide was applied to egg whites and yolks at a concentration of 1000 μg/g. After cooking the egg whites and yolks, concentrations of bifenthrin, DDD, and DDE decreased (P < 0.05), whereas those of fipronil and DDT were unchanged (P > 0.05) in both egg whites and yolks. Next, an in vitro human digestion model that simulates all the steps of human digestion was employed. Until digestion in the small intestine, the concentrations of fipronil and DDT in the cooked egg whites and yolks were unchanged (P > 0.05), whereas those of bifenthrin, DDD, and DDE decreased (P < 0.05) at each digestion step. In the large intestinal digestion step with Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus sakei as enterobacteria, the concentrations of all the insecticides decreased (P < 0.05) in the cooked egg whites and yolks. Among the insecticides, bifenthrin showed the lowest concentration (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the use of bifenthrin as an insecticide would be comparatively less toxic than other insecticides in terms of environmental pollution and human health, because of its easy degradation.

Ionic surfactants may impact removal efficiency of organic contaminants from aqueous solution, but research regarding the adsorption mechanisms on surfactant-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was limited. In this study, three multi-walled and one single-walled CNTs were used as adsorbents to investigate the adsorption behavior and mechanisms of ciprofloxacin (CIP) on CNTs modified by ionic surfactants (cationic CTAB (Cetyltrimethylamnonium bromide) or anionic SDS (Sodium dodecyl sulfate)). More than 80% (82–88%) of the total removed CIP on CTAB-modified CNTs occurred within the first 6 h, much higher than that on SDS-modified CNTs (57–78%). Modeling adsorption kinetics demonstrated that CIP adsorption on surfactant-modified CNTs was controlled by multiple and faster processes, and both external mass transfer and intraparticle diffusion are limiting factors. Relative to SDS, CTAB was significantly (P < 0.001) concentration-dependent in suppressing CIP removal. Besides, the increase in 1/n values of Freundlich model with increasing CTAB concentration suggested that CTAB could be a stronger competitor for CIP adsorption. Hydrophobic interactions predominated zwitterionic CIP adsorption on all CNTs tested, while electrostatic interactions could help control ionizable CIP adsorption on surfactant-modified CNTs depending upon pH. CIP adsorption on modified SWCNTs significantly declined with increasing ionic strength from 1 mM to 100 mM relative to those multi-walled CNTs because the more favorable aggregation of SWCNTs reduced the CIP adsorption, irrespective of which surfactant was added. Significant desorption hysteresis of adsorbed CIP released by SDS and water was observed, but not by CTAB, by which 32.6–54.4% of adsorbed CIP were removed. For SDS-modified CNTs, the mean release ratio (RR) followed an order of MWCNTs (0.075) > MHCNTs (0.058) > SWCNTs (0.057) > MCCNTs (0.049), significantly (P < 0.001) lower than CTAB-CNTs (0.37–0.56). It can be predicted that the tested surfactants co-existing with CNTs depress removal efficiency of diverse contaminants similar to CIP in aqueous systems.
