Azo dye biotransformation mediated by AQS immobilized on activated carbon cloth in the presence of microbial inhibitors

In this work, anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) was covalently immobilized onto activated carbon cloth (ACC), to be used as redox mediator for the reductive decolorization of reactive red 2 (RR2) by an anaerobic consortium. The immobilization of AQS improved the capacity of ACC to transfer electrons, evidenced by an increment of 3.29-fold in the extent of RR2 decolorization in absence of inhibitors, compared to incubations lacking AQS. Experiments conducted in the presence of vancomycin, an inhibitor of acidogenic bacteria, and with 2-bromoethane sulfonic acid (BES), an inhibitor of methanogenic archaea, revealed that acidogenic bacteria are the main responsible for RR2 biotransformation mediated by immobilized AQS. Nonetheless, the results also suggest that some methanogens are able to maintain their capacity to use immobilized AQS as an electron acceptor to sustain the decolorization process, even in the presence of BES.

A severe air quality degradation event occurred in the Santiago Metropolitan Area (SMA), Chile, in June 2014. Meteorological and air quality measurements from 11 stations in the area as well as numerical simulations using the Weather and Research Forecasting (WRF) model were used to explain the main reasons for the occurrence of elevated particulate matter (PM) concentrations. The conditions were characterized with formation of a coastal low in central Chile between the southeastern anticyclone and a high-pressure system over Argentina. At a local scale, these conditions generated a depression at the base of the inversion layer, an increase in the vertical thermal stability, lower humidity and low-wind conditions, which were conducive to a decrease in pollutant dispersion and insufficient ventilation of the polluted air. Measurements and simulations using the WRF model revealed a vertical structure of the boundary layer during these stagnant conditions and provided a basis for a trajectory analysis. The back-trajectory calculation showed that the transport of air parcels was contained in the valley during the highest concentrations. The analysis also enabled the definition of the threshold values of a simple indicator of air pollution (ventilation coefficient, VC), which confirmed the evolution of the episode and divided the observed daily concentrations into two groups, with one including values above the limits prescribed by the national air quality standards (NAQS) and the other including values below these limits. For the SMA, the daily PM concentrations above the NASQ limits were associated with an overall mean threshold value of VC below 500 m² s⁻¹ (for PM₂.₅) and 300 m² s⁻¹ (for PM₁₀). To apply the VC analysis to other pollutants and different geographic locations, different threshold values should be evaluated.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) has recently proposed changes to strengthen the transparency of its pivotal regulatory science policy and procedures. In this context, the US EPA aims to enhance the transparency of dose-response data and models, proposing to consider for the first time non-linear biphasic dose-response models. While the proposed changes have the potential to lead to markedly improved ecological risk assessment compared to past and current approaches, we believe there remain open issues for improving the quality of ecological risk assessment, such as the consideration of adaptive, dynamic and interactive effects. Improved risk assessment including adaptive and dynamic non-linear models (beyond classic threshold models) can enhance the quality of regulatory decisions and the protection of ecological health. We suggest that other countries consider adopting a similar scientific-regulatory posture with respect to dose-response modeling via the inclusion of non-linear biphasic models, that incorporate the dynamic potential of biological systems to adapt (i.e., enhancing positive biological endpoints) or maladapt to low levels of stressor agents.

Usage of neonicotinoids is common in all agricultural regions of the world but data on environmental contamination in tropical regions is scarce. We conducted a survey of five neonicotinoids in soil, water and sediment samples along gradients from crops fields to protected lowland tropical forest, mangroves and wetlands in northern Belize, a region of high biodiversity value. Neonicotinoid frequency of detection and concentrations were highest in soil (68%) and lowest in water (12%). Imidacloprid was the most common residue reaching a maximum of 17.1 ng/g in soil samples. Concentrations in soils differed among crop types, being highest in melon fields and lowest in banana and sugarcane fields. Residues in soil declined with distance to the planted fields, with clothianidin being detected at 100 m and imidacloprid at more than 10 km from the nearest applied field. About half (47%) of the sediments collected contained residues of at least one compound up to 10 km from the source. Total neonicotinoid concentrations in sediments (range 0.014–0.348 ng/g d. w.) were about 10 times lower than in soils from the fields, with imidacloprid being the highest (0.175 ng/g). A probabilistic risk assessment of the residues in the aquatic environment indicates that 31% of sediment samples pose a risk to invertebrate aquatic and benthic organisms by chronic exposure, whereas less than 5% of sediment samples may incur a risk by acute exposure. Current residue levels in water samples do not appear to pose risks to the aquatic fauna. Fugacity modeling of the four main compounds detected suggest that most of the dissipation from the agricultural fields occurs via runoff and leaching through the porous soils of this region. We call for better monitoring of pesticide contamination and invertebrate inventories and finding alternatives to the use of neonicotinoids in agriculture.

CuFeO₂/CeO₂ as a novel catalyst was synthesized and its catalytic performance was evaluated for electro-Fenton degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7). It was demonstrated from the characterization results that the rhombohedral structure of CuFeO₂ and face-centered cubic fluorite structure of CeO₂ remained stable after nanocomposite construction. The impact of such operating parameters as pH, current intensity and, catalyst amount was investigated and the optimum conditions (100 mgL⁻¹ AO7, pH 3, 150 mgL⁻¹ CuFeO₂/CeO₂, I: 150 mA) determination led to 99.3% AO7 removal and 79.1% COD removal in 60 min. The introduction of CeO₂ as non-inert support had a significant impact on H₂O₂ electro-generation as an important step in AO7 removal. CuFeO₂/CeO₂ presented negligible metal leaching (iron 4.13%, copper 2.4%, and cerium 0.33%) which could be due to the strong interaction between active species and support. The nanocomposite performed efficiently in salty systems and two samples of real wastewaters due to Brønsted acidity character of ceria, which makes it a potential choice in industrial applications. The good performance of nanocomposite could be the result of the synergistic effect between Fe, Cu, and Ce. Regarding scavenging measurements results, the electro-Fenton process followed the Haber-Weiss mechanism. The by-products detection was performed using GC-MS analysis to propose an acceptable pathway for EF degradation of AO7. The BMG kinetics model (1/b = 0.969 (min) and 1/m = 0.269 (min⁻¹)) was matched with the experimental data and described the kinetics of reaction very well. The catalytic activity of CuFeO₂/CeO₂ almost remained after six cycles. Based on the obtained results, CuFeO₂/CeO₂ using the benefit of the synergistic effect of Ce³⁺ with Fe²⁺ and Cu⁺can be introduced as a promising novel catalyst for the electro-Fenton reaction in wastewater treatment.

Microaerobic and hypoxic methane oxidation coupled to denitrification (MAME-D and HYME-D) occur in stabilized landfills with leachate recirculation when biological denitrification is limited by lack of organics. To evaluate nitrate denitrification efficiency and culture MAME-D/HYME-D involved bacteria, a leach bed bioreactor semi-continuous experiment was conducted for 60 days in 5 runs, under nitrate concentrations ranging of 20 mg/L–55 mg/L, wherein 5% sterile leachate was added during runs 4 and 5. Although the HYME-D system demonstrated high denitrification efficiency (74.93%) and nitrate removal rate reached 2.62 mmol N/(L⋅d), the MAME-D system exhibited a denitrification efficiency of almost 100% and nitrate removal rate of 4.37 mmol N/(L⋅d). The addition of sterile leachate increased the nitrate removal rate in both systems, but caused the decrease of methane consumption in HYME-D. A stable isotope batch experiment was carried out to investigate the metabolic products by monitoring the 13CO2 and 15N2O production. The production of organic intermediates such as citrate, lactic acid, acetate, and propionic acid were also observed, which exhibited a higher yield in HYME-D. Variations in the microbial communities were analyzed during the semi-continuous experiment. MAME-D was mainly conducted by the association of type Ⅰ methanotroph Methylomonas and the methylotrophic denitrifier Methylotenera. Methane fermentation processed by Methylomonas under hypoxic conditions produced more complex organic intermediates and increased the diversity of related heterotrophic denitrifiers. The addition of sterile real leachate, resulting in increase of COD/N, influenced the microbial community of HYME-D system significantly.

Only limited information is available on the effects of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) on arsenate (As(V)) bioaccumulation and biotransformation in organisms. In this study, we examined the influence of three different DOP forms (β-sodium glycerophosphate (βP), adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP), and D-Glucose-6-phosphate disodium (GP) salts) and inorganic phosphate (IP) on As(V) toxicity, accumulation, and biotransformation in Microcystis aeruginosa. Results showed that M. aeruginosa utilized the three DOP forms to sustain its growth. At a subcellular level, the higher phosphorus (P) distribution in metal-sensitive fractions (MSF) observed in the IP treatments could explain the comparatively lower toxic stress of algae compared to the DOP treatments. Meanwhile, the higher MSF distribution of arsenic (As) in M. aeruginosa in the presence of DOP could explain the higher toxicity with lower 96-h half maximal effective concentration (EC50) values. Although we observed As(V) and P discrimination in M. aeruginosa under IP treatments with high intracellular P/As, we did not find this discrimination under the DOP treatments. As accumulation in algal cells was therefore greatly enhanced by DOP, especially βP, given its lower transformation rate to phosphate compared to ATP and GP in media. Additionally, As(V) reduction and, subsequently, As(III) methylation were greatly facilitated in M. aeruginosa by the presence of DOP, particularly GP, which was confirmed by the higher relative expression of its two functional genes (arsC and arsM). Our findings indicate that As(V) accumulation and its subsequent biotransformation were enhanced by organic P forms, which provides new insight into how DOP modulates As metabolism in algae.

We monitor pollutant accumulation and investigate associated changes at the physiological level within the population of an obligate avian scavenger, the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), from Catalonia (NE Spain). This population is expanding its range, presumably because of the use of human waste disposal sites as food resource. We hypothesized that habitat urbanization, presumably associated with feeding from human wastes, could influence the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants and metals. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between accumulated pollutants and biochemical parameters in nestling blood. We used the proportion of urban surface within an 8 km radius of each nest as a proxy to study the relationship between anthropic influence and pollutant accumulation. Observed blood levels of metals, organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were relatively low, as expected for nestling individuals due to short-term exposures. CB-180 and PBDEs were associated with variations in blood biochemistry parameters; hexa-BDEs appeared positively associated with activities of the enzymes aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase, whereas CB-180 accumulation was associated with an increased activity of creatine phosphokinase and elevated glutathione levels. Increased CB-180 levels were also related to decreased blood concentrations of calcium, cholesterol, α-tocopherol and lutein. A proportion of urban surfaces as low as 6.56% within a radius of 8 km around the nest appears related to the accumulation of CB-180, the majority of analysed PFAS and of PBDE congeners 99 and 209, and increased urbanization was also associated with decreased plasma levels of α-tocopherol and carotenoids. These associations suggest that changes in blood profiles of vitamins, carotenoids or other analytes, despite related to increased plasma levels of CB-180, would be consequence of exploitation of artificial food sources rather than of a direct effect of the pollutants.

Atmospheric aerosols have been found to influence the development of planetary boundary layer (PBL) and hence to aggravate haze pollution in megacities. PBL height (PBLH) determines the vertical extent to which the most pollutant effectively disperses and is a key argument in pollution study. In this study, we quantitatively evaluate aerosol radiation effect on PBL, as well as assessment of surface cooling effect and atmosphere heating effect. All the data are measured at a site of Beijing from 2014 to 2017, of which PBLH is retrieved from micro pulse lidar and aerosol optical depth (AOD) from sunphotometer. Case study shows qualitatively that relative high aerosol load reduces PBLH, and in turn causes a high surface PM₂.₅ concentration. We preliminarily reveal the influential mechanism of aerosol on PBL. The influence of aerosol on the radiation flux of PBL is analyzed, with the correlation coefficient (R) of 0.938 between AOD and radiative forcing of BOA (RFBOA) and R = 0.43 between RFBOA and PBLH. Also, AOD is found to negatively correlate with PBLH (R = −0.41). With the increase of AOD, the cooling effect of surface is enhanced, and further impede the development of PBL. Due to aerosol-induced reduction of PBLH, near surface PM₂.₅ concentration surges and presents an exponential growth following AOD. Then, it is speculated and testified that the relationship between SSA (single scatting albedo) and PBLH would be determined by the location of absorbing aerosol within PBL. The upper PBL absorbing aerosol may decrease PBLH, while the lower absorbing aerosol appear to enhance PBLH. The study probably can provide effective observational evidence for understanding the effect of aerosol on PBL and be a reference of air pollution mitigation in Beijing and its surrounding areas.

Pyrethroids, a class of ubiquitous insecticides, have been recognized as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). A lot of studies have implied the endocrine-disrupting effects of pyrethroids on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. However, there are few review articles regarding the effects of pyrethroids on the HPG axis of mammal and human, especially new research progress made in this area. The present review sums up the effects of pyrethroids on the HPG axis-related reproductive outcomes, including epidemiological investigations based on human biomonitoring, animal studies and in vitro tests. Mechanisms have described that the endocrine-disrupting effects of pyrethroids on mammal can be mediated via the interaction with steroid receptors, the direct action on ion channels and signaling molecules. Finally, we summarize the current research gaps and suggest future directions in this topic.
