Mercury (Hg) concentrations in freshwater fish relates to aquatic Hg concentrations, which largely derives from soil stores of accumulated atmospheric deposition. Hg in catchment soils as a source for aquatic Hg is poorly studied. Here we test if i) peatland soils produce more methylmercury (MeHg) than forest soils; ii) total Hg (THg) concentrations in top soils are determined by atmospheric inputs, while MeHg is produced in the soils; and iii) soil disturbance promotes MeHg production. In two small boreal catchments, previously used in a paired-catchment forest harvest manipulation study, forest soils and peatlands were sampled and analysed for Hg species and additional soil chemistry. In the undisturbed reference catchment, soils were sampled in different vegetation types, of varying productivity as reflected in tree density, where historical data on precipitation and throughfall Hg and MeHg fluxes were available. Upper soil THg contents were significantly correlated to throughfall inputs of Hg, i.e. lowest in the tree-less peatland and highest in the dense spruce forest. For MeHg, top layer concentrations were similar in forest soils and peatlands, likely related to atmospheric input and local production, respectively. The local peatland MeHg production was documented through significantly higher MeHg-to-THg ratios in the deeper soil layer samples. In the disturbed catchment, soils were sampled in and just outside wheeltracks in an area impacted by forest machinery. Here, MeHg concentrations and the MeHg-to-THg ratios in the upper 5 cm were weakly significantly (p = 0.07) and significantly (p = 0.04) different in and outside of the wheeltracks, respectively, suggesting that soil disturbance promotes methylation. Differences in catchment Hg and MeHg streamwater concentrations were not explained by soil Hg and MeHg information, perhaps because hydrological pathways are a stronger determinant of streamwater chemistry than small variations in soil chemistry driven by disturbance and atmospheric inputs of Hg. | acceptedVersion

Pangasius production in Vietnam is widely known as a success story in aquaculture, the fastest growing global food system because of its tremendous expansion by volume, value and the number of international markets to which Pangasius has been exported in recent years. While certification schemes are becoming significant features of international fish trade and marketing, an increasing number of Pangasius producers have followed at least one of the certification schemes recognised by international markets to incorporate environmental and social sustainability practices in aquaculture, typically the Pangasius Aquaculture Dialogue (PAD) scheme certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). An assessment of the environmental benefit of applying certification schemes on Pangasius production, however, is still needed. This article compared the environmental impact of ASC-certified versus non-ASC certified intensive Pangasius aquaculture, using a statistically supported Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). We focused on both resource-related (water, land and total resources) and emissions-related (global warming, acidification, freshwater and marine eutrophication) categories.

International audience | Wintertime anticyclonic conditions, associated with clear sky and cold nights, trigger the formation of persistent layers of stable air over the ground. In an urban area, these persistent layers lead to poor air quality, especially when the terrain is mountainous. This is particularly the case in the Arve River Valley near the city of Passy, located 20 km downstream of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, where air quality stands among the poorest ones in France.Beyond the monitoring of air quality, as performed by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes air quality agency or within the scientific project DECOMBIO led by the Institute for Geosciences and the Environment (IGE), knowledge of the atmospheric dynamics at the valley scale should be gained to understand how pollutants are dispersed. This is the motivation of the Passy project, which started in 2014. It relies on the Passy-2015 field experiment, whereof presentation, along with the discussion of a few results, is the purpose of the present paper. The objective of this field experiment is to document the atmospheric dynamics in the Arve River Valley during wintertime pollution episodes.The work conducted during the Passy project and the analysis of the Passy-2015 field experiment will benefit from a several-year long collaboration among the different partners. The knowledge thus gained will contribute to refine weather forecast and air quality prediction in the Arve River Valley and, more generally, in mountain urban areas under stable conditions. From an operational perspective, our goal is to improve our ability to forecast critical events such as low temperatures, ice and fog formation, pollution events or locations subject to high pollutant concentration. | Les conditions anticycloniques hivernales (ciel clair, nuits froides) conduisent à la formation de couches stables persistantes qui favorisent les épisodes de pollution, particulièrement en terrain montagneux. Ils contribueront à affiner la prévision du temps et de la qualité de l’air dans ce type de vallée, et plus généralement en conditions stables. Il s’agit en particulier d’améliorer la capacité à prévoir des phénomènes critiques, comme les températures minimales, le verglas, le brouillard, les évènements de pollution ou encore les zones de pollution intense.

peer reviewed | Phytostabilisation (i.e. using plants to immobilise contaminants) represents a well-known technology to hamper heavy metal spread across landscapes. In Katanga (D. R. Congo), Microchloa altera, a tolerant grass from the copper hills, was recently identified as a candidate species to stabilise copper in the soil. More than 50 grasses compose this flora, which may be studied to implement phytostabilisation strategies. However, little is known about their phenology, tolerance, reproductive strategy or demography. The present study aims to characterize the other Poaceae that may be used in phytostabilisation purposes based on the following criteria: their ecological distribution, seed production at two times, abundance, soil coverage and the germination percentage of their seeds. We selected seven perennial Poaceae that occur on the copper hills. Their ecological distributions (i.e. species response curves) have been modelled along copper or cobalt gradients with generalized additive models using logic link based on 172 presence/absence samples on three sites. For other variables, a total of 69 quadrats (1 m2) were randomly placed across three sites and habitats. For each species, we compared the number of inflorescence-bearing stems (IBS) by plot, the percentage of cover, the number of seeds by IBS and the estimated number of seeds by plot between sites and habitat. Three species (Andropogon schirensis, Eragrostis racemosa and Loudetia simplex) were very interesting for phytostabilisation programs. They produced a large quantity of seeds and had the highest percentage of cover. However, A. schirensis and L. simplex presented significant variations in the number of seeds and the percentage of cover according to site.

Les agroécosystèmes sont des sources et des puits de polluants atmosphériques et de gaz à effet de serre et, par là-même, ils interviennent dans les relations entre climat et pollution de l’air. Cette contribution, positive ou négative, résulte de processus complexes, à la fois directs et indirects, et prend des formes très diverses : augmentation ou diminution des émissions et dépôts, augmentation attendue de la fréquence des feux, modification de la protection phytosanitaire etc. Comme pour la plupart des processus biologiques, les incertitudes sont importantes et les verrous de connaissances restent nombreux, alors qu’une connaissance des différents facteurs d’influence, naturels et anthropiques est nécessaire pour limiter la contribution des agroécosystèmes à la fois au changement climatique et à la pollution de l’air, tout en préservant les performances économiques de l’activité agricole. Enfin, l’agriculture est concernée par tout un ensemble de politiques publiques relatives au changement climatique et à la pollution de l’air, mais également à la pollution des eaux et à la protection de l’environnement, politiques publiques qui peuvent interagir en synergie ou être antagonistes. | Interactions between climate change and air pollution in the context of agriculture. Agroecosystems are sources and sinks of atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases. They are therefore involved in climate change and air pollution and their cross-relations. This contribution can be positive or negative. It results from complex processes, both direct and indirect, which is related to a range of topics: increase or decrease of emission and deposition, increase in fire frequency, change in plant protection etc. As for most of biological processes, there are large uncertainties and knowledge is lacking over a range of fields. However it is necessary to have a global overview of the involved processes and drivers when trying to limit the contribution of agroecosystem both to climate change and air pollution, with attention to the economic sustainability of agriculture under global change. Moreover agriculture activities refer to public policies related not only to climate change and air pollution but also water pollution or protection of the environment. These policies may interact positively or be antagonist.
