Repeated measures of prenatal phthalate exposure and maternal hemoglobin concentration trends: The Ma'anshan birth cohort (MABC) study

A prospective cohort study of a Chinese population was conducted to investigate the relationship between prenatal phthalates exposure and maternal hemoglobin or anemia. Based on the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort study, 7 phthalate metabolites were quantified in spot pregnancy urine samples (n = 9263) from 3269 pregnant women during each trimester. The maternal hemoglobin concentrations were obtained from electronic medical records at the same three time points for each participant during pregnancy. Anemia was defined as a hemoglobin concentration below 110 g/L in pregnant women. Repeated measures and trimester-specific analyses were used to estimate the effects of phthalates exposure on maternal hemoglobin and anemia. The prevalence of anemia was 3.6%, 27.0%, and 26.5% during the first, second and third trimester, respectively. Repeated measures analysis showed that hemoglobin concentrations decreased by 0.55, 0.19, 0.57, 0.49, and 0.54 g/L with each 1 ln-transformed concentration increase of MBP, MBzP, MEHP, MEOHP, and MEHHP, respectively. Exposure to MMP, MBP, MEHP, MEOHP, and MEHHP increased the risk of anemia by 1.11-fold, 1.21-fold, 1.20-fold, 1.13-fold, and 1.16-fold, respectively. Trimester-specific regression models stratified by the sample collection time during pregnancy generated consistent results. This is the first study focusing on the effect of prenatal phthalate exposures on hemoglobin or anemia in pregnant Chinese women. We found that prenatal phthalates exposure not only decreased the concentrations of hemoglobin but also showed associations with the prevalence of anemia. Associations appeared stronger for the subsample representing women pregnant with a male fetus than those pregnant with a female fetus. Anemia remains a moderate public health problem in China, and effective measures should be implemented.

Atmospheric particulates play a vital role in the transport of potentially toxic metals, being an important exposure pathways of people to toxic elements, which is faster and can occur in a much larger scale than water, soil and biota transport. Windblown materials in abandoned tailing ponds have not been well examined. The objectives of this investigation were: to study the major physical and geochemical properties of the materials eroded by wind inside the tailing ponds, and to understand the relative contribution of different sources to its heavy metals concentration. Study area is located in Cartagena-La Union mining district (SE Spain), where metallic mining of Fe, Pb and Zn has been developed for more than 2500 years. Wind-eroded particulates were monthly collected at 3 different heights (20, 50, and 80 cm) from the ground for a period of a full year using 4 dust collectors. Four tailing samples and 4 surface soil samples from the surrounding hills were also taken. Dust, soil, and tailing samples were examined for pH, particle size distribution, electrical conductivity, calcium carbonate content, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Mn, Co, Ni, Ti and Zr concentrations. The results indicated that very coarse textured, slightly saline, and almost neutral wind-eroded deposits were generated with a very high temporal variability throughout the year. They also showed that the concentration of Cd, Mn, Pb and Zn, in the dust samples is extraordinarily high (18, 1254, 1831, and 5747 mg kg−1 respectively), whereas Co, Ni, and Cu had concentrations into the range of background concentrations found in the Earth's crust (3.8, 12, and 60 mg kg−1 respectively). Besides, the concentration of both categories of heavy metals in the dust samples was higher than that in tailing and less than that of the soils. The barren surfaces of tailing ponds and also the surface soils of the surrounding area seem to be the major contributors to the dust collected. Therefore, abandoned mines as well as their tailing ponds should be rehabilitated by proper technologies and then well stabilized and/or covered by appropriate plant vegetation to control the transfer, particularly by air, of environmentally hazardous materials to other areas.

Mercury (Hg) emissions from point sources to air may disperse over long distance depending on Hg speciation in the plume. A significant fraction of Hg, particularly in its divalent forms, deposits locally and causes pollution to surrounding biomes. The objective of this study was to investigate (1) the historic Hg deposition to the immediate vicinity of an industrial complex that had intentional use of Hg (i.e., chlor-alkali and polyvinyl chloride production) for 5 decades until 2011, and (2) the Hg⁰ re-emission from soil to air soon after the closure of the facility. The spatial distribution of near-ground Hg⁰ vapor in air, soil Hg concentration and stable isotope ratio, air-soil Hg⁰ flux and Hg⁰ concentration in soil pore-gas were measured. It was found that the surrounding soils are severely contaminated with Hg due to the Hg release of the industrial complex, displaying soil Hg content up to 4.8 μg g⁻¹. A spatial trend of Hg mass dependent isotope fractionation signature (δ²⁰²Hg = −2.11‰ to 0.72‰) with respect to the distance from the closed facility was identified, representing a mixing between regional background and industrial Hg sources. Hg release from the industrial operation enhanced surface soil Hg content within a 6.5-km radius from the facility. Inside the facility, residual Hg wastes (i.e., electrolysis sludge and consumed HgCl₂ catalyst) represent a strong localized emission source of atmospheric Hg⁰. Near-ground atmospheric Hg⁰ concentration and soil Hg⁰ efflux progressively elevated toward the facility with an increase by 2–3 orders of magnitude compared to the values observed in the off-site background. These results suggest that the natural soil surfaces surrounding the closed industrial facility act as a large nonpoint source emitting legacy deposited Hg as much as the release from naturally enriched mines.

A time-distance-dependent deposition model is built to investigate the effects of hydrodynamic forces on the transport and deposition of polydispersed particles and the evolution of deposition rates with time and distance. Straining and the heterogeneity of the particle population are considered to play important roles in the decreasing distribution of deposition rates. Numerical simulations were applied in a series of sand column experiments at different fluid velocities for three different porous media. The effects of hydrodynamics forces are elaborated with the systematic variations of deposition dynamic parameters of the proposed model. With retention distributions with particle size as well as temporal and spatial evolutions of deposition rates, the transport and deposition mechanisms of polydispersed particles will be elucidated through the interplay of the variation of the particle size distribution of mobile particle populations and the geometrical change of the porous medium due to retention (straining and blocking).

Indoor dust is considered an important human exposure route to flame retardants (FRs), which has arised concern due the toxic properties of some of these substances. In this study, ten organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and four new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were determined in indoor dust from different places in Araraquara-SP (Brazil). The sampled places included houses, apartments, offices, primary schools and cars. The analysis of the sample extracts was performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and two ionization techniques were used (electron ionization – EI; electron capture negative ionization – ECNI). OPFRs were the most abundant compounds and tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP), tris(phenyl) phosphate (TPHP), tris(1,3-dichloroisopropyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) and tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) were present at the highest concentrations. Among the brominated FRs, the most ubiquitous compounds were BDE-209, bis(2-ethylhexyl) tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE). Statistical analysis revealed that there were differences among dust typologies for TBOEP, TDCIPP, ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPHP), BDE-209, 2-ethylhexyl 2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB), BEH-TEBP and DBDPE, which were attributed to different construction materials in each particular environment and to the age of the buildings. The highest levels of brominated FRs were observed in offices, TBOEP was at high concentration in primary schools, and TDCIPP was at high concentration in cars. A preliminary risk assessment revealed that toddlers were exposed to TBOEP levels higher than the reference dose when considering the worst case scenario. The results obtained in this study showed for the first time that although Brazil does not regulate the use of FRs, these substances are present in indoor dust at levels similar to the observed in countries that have strict fire safety standards, and that humans are exposed to complex mixtures of these contaminants via indoor dust.

Secondary salinization represents a global threat to freshwater ecosystems. Salts, such as NaCl, can be toxic to freshwater organisms and may also modify the outcome of species interactions (e.g. host-parasite interactions). In nature, hosts and their parasites are embedded in complex communities where they face anthropogenic and biotic (i.e. predators) stressors that influence host-parasite interactions. As human populations grow, considering how anthropogenic and natural stressors interact to shape host-parasite interactions will become increasingly important. We conducted two experiments investigating: (1) the effects of NaCl on tadpole susceptibility to trematodes and (2) whether density- and trait-mediated effects of a parasite-predator (i.e. damselfly) and a host-predator (i.e. dragonfly), respectively, modify the effects of NaCl on susceptibility to trematode infection. In the first experiment, we exposed tadpoles to three concentrations of NaCl and measured parasite infection in tadpoles. In the second experiment, we conducted a 2 (tadpoles exposed to 0 g L−1 NaCl vs. 1 g L−1 NaCl) x 4 (no predator, free-ranging parasite-predator (damselfly), non-lethal host-predator (dragonfly kairomone), and free-ranging parasite-predator + dragonfly kairomone) factorial experiment. In the absence of predators, exposure to NaCl increased parasite infection. Of the predator treatments, NaCl only caused an increase in parasite infection in the presence of the parasite-predator. However, direct consumption of trematodes caused a reduction in overall infection in the parasite-predator treatment. In the dragonfly kairomone treatment, a reduction in tadpole movement (i.e. trematode avoidance behavior) led to an increase in overall infection. In the parasite-predator + dragonfly kairomone treatment, antagonistic effects of the parasite-predator (reduction in trematode abundance) and dragonfly kairomone (reduction in parasite avoidance behavior) resulted in intermediate parasite infection. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that NaCl can increase amphibian susceptibility to parasites, and underscores the importance of considering predator-mediated interactions in understanding how contaminants influence host-parasite interactions.

Small heterotrophic protists (flagellates and naked amoebae) are very abundant in soil and play a key role in maintaining soil services. Hence, knowledge on how xenobiotics affect these organisms is essential in ecosystem management. Cadmium (Cd) is an increasing environmental issue as both industrial deposition and recycling of heavy metal rich waste products have led to Cd enrichment of soils. Evaluation of toxicity of Cd to micro-organisms is often performed using a solution of pure Cd (e.g. CdCl) in liquid culture. This approach may be highly misleading as interactions between Cd and other substances, e.g. various ions or inherent soil components often strongly modify Cd toxicity. Hence, we compared the toxic effect of Cd to small heterotrophic protists in soil microcosms and liquid culture. We also evaluated how zinc (Zn) affects Cd toxicity, as Zn usually accompanies Cd in a ratio of c. 100:1, and is known to impede Cd toxicity. In the soil microcosms, we also monitored the primary food source of the protists, i.e. culturable bacteria, and used soil respiration as a proxy of soil functioning. Finally, we examined to what extent Cd actually sorbs to soil. We found 1) that c. 10³ times more Cd was required to obtain the same effect in the soil microcosms compared to the liquid culture, 2) that soil sorption explains why Cd, even though highly toxic in aqueous solutions, has very limited effect when applied to soil, and 3) (very surprisingly) that in our experimental systems Zn was as toxic as Cd. Our study suggests that Cd toxicity to soil protists will be small because most Cd in soil will be sorbed to the soil matrix and because the Zn:Cd ratio of 100:1 in most substances, incl. pollutants, will mean that lethal Zn effects will occur before Cd reaches toxic levels.

α, β and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) are persistent and bioaccumulative pollutants and they were included in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Old lindane factories generated high amounts of wastes with HCH and other Chlorinated Organic Compounds (COCS). These were often dumped in the surroundings of the production sites, polluting soil and groundwaters with the associated risk of surface pollution. This is the case of the Sardas and Bailin landfills, located in Sabiñánigo (Huesca, Spain). Among the waste from lindane production, a liquid residue was detected in the landfill subsurfaces, forming a dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) composed of HCH isomers, benzene and chlorobenzenes, with a high impact on groundwater pollution. In this study, six DNAPL samples obtained from the Bailin and Sardas landfills were analyzed by GC/MSD and GC/FID/ECD. Compounds were identified using mass spectra and the retention index from pure standards and literature information. Pure positional isomers of dichlorobenzene (DCB), trichlorobenzene (TCB), tetrachlorobenzene (TetraCB), HCH and pentachlorocyclohexene (PentaCX) were distinguished and quantified. In addition, heptachlorocyclohexane (HeptaCH) isomers, precursors of hexacholorocylohexene (HexaCX), were also identified and quantified in the DNAPL samples, although the corresponding isomers could not be discriminated. Information about PentaCX, HexaCx and HeptaCH identification is very limited in the literature. HCH contents in the DNAPL ranged from 22% to 30% in weight, the major isomers being lindane and δ-HCH, followed by α-HCH. The β isomer was the least abundant. HeptaCH contents were present in the same order of magnitude as HCHs in the DNAPL. PentaCXs and HexaCXs could have appeared as dehydrochlorination derivatives of HCHs and HeptaCHs, respectively. Two of the DNAPLs analyzed showed a higher content of TCBs and TetraCBs, associated with lower HCH and HeptaCH contents. Variations of these compounds in the DNAPL could be related to an alkaline dehydrochlorination in the landfill conditions.

This study aimed to develop a novel in-situ method to directly remove toxic hexavalent chromium anions from groundwater. The characteristics of Mg/Al-layered double hydroxides (LDH) involving in-situ synthesis and interlayer exchangeable anions can facilitate to remove Cr(VI) from solution. Two different methods of LDH preparation were employed to explore the adsorption efficiency of (di)chromates, such as traditional coprecipitation (CO₃-LDH) and innovative in-situ synthesis (in-situ-LDH). The synthesized LDH samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and zeta potential. The results demonstrated that the adsorptive amount of Cr(VI) for the in-situ synthesis process dramatically increased with an increase in initial Cr(VI) concentrations from 100 mg/L to 900 mg/L. The kinetic study indicated that the constant rate (k₂) of the pseudo-second-order equation significantly decreased when the initial concentration of Cr(VI) exceeded 500 mg/L. The removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was slightly dependent on solution pH (5.0–12) values. The in-situ-LDH absorbent (339 mg/g) exhibited the significantly higher Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity than CO₃-LDH (246 mg/g). The primary adsorption mechanism was anion exchange; meanwhile, the adsorption-coupled reduction mechanism also played an integral role. The advanced in-situ synthetic method can be developed to efficiently remove toxic hexavalent chromium anions from groundwater.

We describe a batch-extraction with simulated digestive fluid (salivary fluid, gastric fluid and intestinal fluid) to estimate the bioaccessibility of inhaled trace metals (TMs) in particulate matter less than 10 and 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅). Concentrations of the assayed TMs (As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Mn, Cu, Zn, Sb, Hg and Pb) were determined in PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ samples by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The TMs with the largest soluble fractions for airborne PM collected from winter and summer in saliva were Mn and Sb, respectively; in seasons this became Co in gastric fluid and Cu in intestinal fluid. Clearly, bioaccessibility is strongly dependent on particle size, the component of simulated digestive fluids (e.g., pH, digestive enzymes pepsin and trypsin), and the chemical properties of metal ions. The particle size and seasonal variation affected the inhaled bioaccessible fraction of PM-bound TMs during mucociliary clearance, which transported PM from the tracheal and the bronchial region to the digestive system. This study provides direct evidence for TMs in airborne PM being bioaccessible TMs are likely to possess an enhanced digestive toxic potential due to airborne PM pollution.
