Freshwater environments are susceptible to possible contamination by residual antibiotics that are released through different sources, such as agricultural runoffs, sewage discharges and leaching from nearby farms. Freshwater environment can thus become reservoirs where an antibiotic impact microorganisms, and is an important public health concern. Degradation and dilution processes are fundamental for predicting the actual risk of antibiotic resistance dissemination from freshwater reservoirs. This study reviews major approaches for detecting and quantifying antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARBs) and genes (ARGs) in freshwater and their prevalence in these environments. Finally, the role of dilution, degradation, transmission and the persistence and fate of ARB/ARG in these environments are also reviewed. Culture-based single strain approaches and molecular techniques that include polymerase chain reaction (PCR), quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and metagenomics are techniques for quantifying ARB and ARGs in freshwater environments. The level of ARBs is extremely high in most of the river systems (up to 98% of the total detected bacteria), followed by lakes (up to 77% of the total detected bacteria), compared to dam, pond, and spring (<1%). Of most concern is the occurrence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant Enterococcus (VRE), which cause highly epidemic infections. Dilution and natural degradation do not completely eradicate ARBs and ARGs in the freshwater environment. Even if the ARBs in freshwater are effectively inactivated by sunlight, their ARG-containing DNA can still be intact and capable of transferring resistance to non-resistant strains. Antibiotic resistance persists and is preserved in freshwater bodies polluted with high concentrations of antibiotics. Direct transmission of indigenous freshwater ARBs to humans as well as their transitory insertion in the microbiota can occur. These findings are disturbing especially for people that rely on freshwater resources for drinking, crop irrigation, and food in form of fish.

Coastal wetlands are widely recognized as atmospheric methane sources. However, recent field studies suggest that some coastal wetlands could also act as methane sinks, but the mechanism is not yet clear. Here, we investigated methane oxidation with different electron acceptors (i.e., oxygen, nitrate/nitrite, sulfate, Fe(III) and Mn(IV)) in four coastal wetlands in China using a combination of molecular biology methods and isotopic tracing technologies. The geochemical profiles and in situ Gibbs free energies suggest that there was significant nitrite-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (nitrite-AOM) in the sub-surface sediments; this was subsequently experimentally verified by both the microbial abundance and activity. Remarkably, the methanotrophic communities seemed to exist in the sediments as layered structures, and the surface aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria were able to take up atmospheric methane at a rate of 0.10–0.18 nmol CH₄ day⁻¹ cm⁻², while most, if not all, sedimentary methane was being completely consumed by anaerobic methanotrophs (23–58% by methane oxidizers in phylum NC10). These results suggest that coastal methane sinks might be governed by diverse microbial communities where NC10 methane oxidizers contributed significantly. This finding helps to better understand and predict the coastal methane cycle and reduce uncertainties in the estimations of the global methane flux.

Plant-endophyte synergism has been demonstrated to play a key role in the phytoremediation of contaminated water and soil. Phytoalexins, a type of chemical component in the plant apoplast, can be produced by plants in response to stimulation by endophytes. Phytoalexins may have distinct effects on the nutritional and metabolic functions of endophytes; however, direct evidence is not available to prove the effect of phytoalexins on the hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOC)-degradation activity of endophytes. In this paper, three different types of phytoalexins, coumarin, resveratrol and rutin, were selected to study their effect on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by an endophytic bacterium Methylobacterium extorquens C1. The effects of the three phytoalexins on bacterial sorption and intracellular enzymatic activities were tested to further analyze the mechanism by which the phytoalexins affect the PAH degradation performance of M. extorquens C1. The results showed that the removal rate of PAHs by M. extorquens C1 increased in the presence of low levels of the three phytoalexins. The most effective concentrations of coumarin, resveratrol and rutin were 0.20, 0.15, and 0.25 mg/L, respectively, and the removal rate of PAHs was increased by approximately 18.3–35.0%. At the optimal concentrations, the three phytoalexins significantly promoted the sorption of PAHs by M. extorquens C1, and also enhanced the activities of catechol dioxygenases and dehydrogenase of M. extorquens C1. The positive effect of phytoalexins on both bacterial sorption and intracellular enzymatic activities promotes the overall removal of PAHs from endophytes. These results may deepen our understanding of plant-microbe cooperative mechanisms in the degradation of organic pollutants and provide a new approach for chemically enhanced bioremediation in the future.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, one of the most popular herbicides in the world, and its toxicity has caused increasing concerns. The present study aims to investigate the toxic effects of prenatal exposure to pure glyphosate or Roundup on lipid metabolism in offspring. During gestational days (GDs), ICR mice (from Institute of Cancer Research) were given distilled water, 0.5% glyphosate solution (w/v, 0.5 g/100 ml) or 0.5%-glyphosate Roundup solution orally. The livers and serum samples of the offspring were collected on gestational day 19 (GD19), postnatal day 7 (PND7) and PND21. The results showed a significant decrease in the body weight and obvious hepatic steatosis with excessive lipid droplet formation in offspring. Moreover, the concentrations of lipids such as triglycerides (TGs), total cholesterol (T-CHO), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterols (LDL-C) increased to a significant extent in both the serum and livers. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the expression levels of the genes SREBP1C, SREBP2, Fasn, Hmgcr, Hmgcs and PPARα, which are related to lipid biosynthesis or catabolism in the liver. These results demonstrate that chronic prenatal exposure to glyphosate can result in lipid metabolism disruption in the offspring of mice, as glyphosate exerts a negative influence on the expression of lipogenesis genes.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have adverse impacts on plants when released into environments, but their toxic mechanism is still a matter of debate. Here we present a combined analysis of physiology and transcriptome of Arabidopsis thaliana leaves exposure to 30 mg L−1 AgNPs and Ag+ for six days to explore the toxicity mechanism of AgNPs on Arabidopsis. Both transcriptomic and physiological results showed that AgNPs induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation and damaged photosynthesis. The toxicity of AgNPs is not merely attributable to Ag+ release and much higher photosynthetic toxicity and ROS accumulation were observed in 30 mg L−1 AgNPs than that in 0.12 mg L−1 Ag+. About 60% genes were similarly up- or down-regulated at the same concentration of AgNPs and Ag+ and these genes were enriched in photosynthesis and response to the stimulus. However, 302 genes, including those involved in glucosinolates synthesis, were specifically regulated under AgNPs treatments. In conclusion, more than the released Ag+, nanoparticle-specific effects are responsible for the toxicity of AgNPs in Arabidopsis thaliana.

This study aimed to assess the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of in-vehicle exposure in Tehran, Iran to formaldehyde and acetaldehyde for different models of taxis, and to explore the effects of city zone, taxi vehicle type, the taxi's age (<1, 1–5, 5–10), fuel type (gasoline, CNG, and LPG), and refueling activities on the estimated health risks based on previously measured concentrations. The overall and age-specific carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of these compounds for taxi drivers and passengers were estimated separately using Monte Carlo simulations. Three scenarios of exposure frequency were defined for taxis commuting in different zones of city: Restricted Traffic Zone (RTZ) and Odd-Even Zone (OEZ) as two plans to reduce air pollution, and no-restriction zone (NRZ). The carcinogenic risks for drivers and passengers, the average risks of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde for most cases were above the 1 × 10⁻⁴. The health risks were greater in Restricted Traffic Zone (RTZ) and Odd-Even Zone (OEZ) in comparison to no-restriction zone (NRZ). The carcinogenic risk from formaldehyde exposures were higher than those for acetaldehyde in all cases. Taxis fueled with LPG showed lower cancer risks for both acetaldehyde and formaldehyde. Refueling increased the carcinogenic risk from both compounds. For non-carcinogenic risks from acetaldehyde, the average hazard ratios for both drivers and passengers were >1, indicating a non-negligible risk. Cancer and non-cancer risks for the taxi drivers were greater than the passengers given the higher time of occupancy. The present study showed that transportation in taxis can impose significant long-term health risks to both passengers and drivers. Development and investment in cleaner choices for public transportations are required.

Climate change and pharmaceuticals contamination constitute two of the most relevant stressors on the aquatic ecosystems, however, there is a huge lack of information regarding the interactive effects of both stressors. For that, a mesocosm experiment was implemented where adult zebrafish were exposed to combined temperature and the progestin levonorgestrel (LNG) for 21 days. Considering that the liver is one of the organs where there is a greater metabolization and accumulation of toxicants, the main objective of this work was to assess the effects of both stressors on the female zebrafish hepatocytes morphology and functioning, through stereological and immunohistochemical techniques.Our results revealed an increase of coefficient of variation of the number distribution of hepatocytes volume (CVN(υ)) for individuals exposed to LNG, which denotes an increase of the hepatocytes size variability and is suggestive of functional impacts. This was corroborated by the signs of increased glycogen content with the exposure to increased LNG concentrations and temperature, indicating modified hepatocyte glycogen metabolism. Such disturbances can be considered indicators that the fish had to deal with impacts caused by the stress factors.Regarding the immunoreactivity, from the four proteins selected (catalase, CYP1A, HSP90 and Vtg), just in two of them (catalase and Vtg) were observed some responses to both stressors. For catalase there was a hormetic response, in which exposure to lower LNG concentrations caused a significant higher positive immunostaining than under higher LNG concentrations. While, for Vtg, significant effects of temperature and LNG existed, in which a decline in Vtg immunostaining was observed with exposure to higher temperature and lower LNG concentrations. These results should be seen as a warning sign about fine impacts of multiple stressors, such as temperature and progestogens, on the structure and functioning of zebrafish liver and potentially in other aquatic organisms, and on their health implications.

Microplastics are a contaminant of emerging concern which enter the marine environment from a variety of sources. The ingestion and toxic effects of microplastics on marine life, especially for filter feeders, are a cause of concern in view of their ubiquitous nature and their similar size as food sources. To assess the toxic effects of microspheres ingested by brine shrimp larvae, we exposed Artemia parthenogenetica to 10 μm polystyrene microspheres at different concentrations. These concentrations were approximate to the extrapolated marine aquatic environmentally relevant concentrations. The lowest polystyrene concentrations at which ingestion was visualized in A. parthenogenetica were 12 ± 0.57 particles/mL (6.7 ± 0.32 μg/L) and 1.1 ± 0.16 particles/mL (0.61 ± 0.088 μg/L), respectively. There were no significant impacts on the survival, growth or development in A. parthenogenetica occurring over the 14-d exposure across a range of polystyrene nominal concentrations (1–1000 particles/mL or 0.55–550 μg/L). However, abnormal ultrastructures of intestinal epithelial cells were observed upon exposure to polystyrene microspheres, including fewer and disordered microvilli, an increased number of mitochondrion and the appearance of autophagosome. These phenomena could affect nutrition absorption and energy metabolism. Although no major acute or chronic toxicity effects on A. parthenogenetica were observed over 24-h or 14-d exposures, this study provides evidence that the ingestion of polystyrene microplastics at extrapolated environmentally relevant concentrations can be visualized through a microscope to be causing a series of responses in intestinal epithelial cells.

The potential persistence and migration of 14 antibiotics comprising sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, macrolides and tetracyclines were conducted using a 50-d recirculating flume study supported by batch attenuation experiments with spiked concentrations. The study demonstrated that photodegradation was the dominant attenuation process for these antibiotics in the water environment. The half-lives of 2–26 d were in order of sulfadiazine > sulfadimethoxine > sulfamerazine > sulfamethoxazole > sulfamethazine > sulfathiazole > ofloxacin > enrofloxacin > norfloxacin > ciprofloxacin > erythromycin > tetracycline > roxithromycin > oxytetracycline. These modest half-lives meant that the antibiotics were predicted to travel 30–400 km down a typical river before half the concentration would be lost. All antibiotics were detected on the surface sediment in the flume study. Under hyporheic exchange, some of them continually migrated into the deeper sediment and also the sediment pore water. All fluoroquinolones were detected in the sediments. The sulfonamides were detected in the pore water with relatively high concentrations and frequencies. Sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine and sulfathiazole in the upper layer pore water were found to be approaching equilibrium with the surface water. The high presence of sulfonamides in the pore water indicated that their high mobility and persistence potentially pose a risk to hyporheic zone.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, the majority of which is caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) irradiance, which is one component of sunlight. National Environmental Public Health Tracking Program at CDC has collaborated with partners to develop and disseminate county-level daily UV irradiance (2005–2015) and total solar irradiance (1991–2012) data for the contiguous United States. UV irradiance dataset was derived from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), and solar irradiance was extracted from National Solar Radiation Data Base (NSRDB) and SolarAnywhere data. Firstly, we produced daily population-weighted UV and solar irradiance datasets at the county level. Then the spatial distributions and long-term trends of UV irradiance, solar irradiance and the ratio of UV irradiance to solar irradiance were analyzed. The national average values across all years are 4300 Wh/m², 2700 J/m² and 130 mW/m² for global horizontal irradiance (GHI), erythemally weighted daily dose of UV irradiance (EDD) and erythemally weighted UV irradiance at local solar noon time (EDR), respectively. Solar, UV irradiances and the ratio of UV to solar irradiance all increased toward the South and in some areas with high altitude, suggesting that using solar irradiance as indicator of UV irradiance in studies covering large geographic regions may bias the true pattern of UV exposure. National annual average daily solar and UV irradiances increased significantly over the years by about 0.3% and 0.5% per year, respectively. Both datasets are available to the public through CDC's Tracking network. The UV irradiance dataset is currently the only publicly-available, spatially-resolved, and long-term UV irradiance dataset covering the contiguous United States. These datasets help us understand the spatial distributions and temporal trends of solar and UV irradiances, and allow for improved characterization of UV and sunlight exposure in future studies.
