Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are now under review by the Stockholm Convention as a candidate for POPs for their persistence, toxicity, bioaccumulation, and long-range atmospheric transport. Data regarding PCN levels and their environmental fate are sparse in China. The PCN concentration and distribution in soils of the Pearl River Delta were reported, and the average total concentration was 59.9 ± 86.7 pg/g. Tri-CNs was the dominant homologue group, and CN 24 was the most abundant congener. A gradient of PCN levels between more and less developed areas was observed. Based on fugacity fraction results, CN 51 is proposed as a possible source marker for specific combustion emissions. Air-soil exchange of PCNs was estimated by calculating the soil and air fugacity. Fugacity fraction values indicated that tri- to penta-CNs were closer to equilibrium in winter and toward net volatilization in summer, while hexa-CNs experienced net air-to-soil transfer in both seasons.

MeHg biomagnification by the phantom midge Chaoborus in relation to MeHg concentrations in their prey and its migratory behavior was investigated in two Canadian Precambrian Shield lakes. Three Chaoborus species with contrasted migratory behavior were collected in a fishless and a fish-inhabited lake. All species accumulated MeHg through their ontogenic development. In the lake inhabited by fish, all instars of Chaoborus punctipennis displayed a marked migratory behavior and were unable to biomagnify MeHg, whereas in the fishless lake, Chaoborus americanus and Chaoborus trivittatus biomagnified MeHg. Reduced biomagnification capacity of C. trivittatus, the coexisting species living with C. americanus, was also ascribed to a progressive vertical segregation with age. Growth dilution, amount and type of prey items or trophic position could not explain the different patterns of biomagnification. Our findings demonstrate that the most common invertebrate predator of temperate planktonic food webs can biomagnify mercury, contrarily to previous reports.

To assess ozone sensitivity of subtropical broadleaved tree species and explore possible underlying mechanisms, six evergreen and two deciduous native species were exposed to either charcoal-filtered air or elevated O₃ (E-O₃, ∼150ppb) for one growing season. Initial visible symptoms in deciduous species appeared much earlier than those in evergreen species. The species which first showed visible symptoms also had the largest reductions in biomass. E-O₃ induced significant decreases in photosynthesis rate, chlorophyll content and antioxidant capacity but a significant increase in malondialdehyde content in two deciduous species and two evergreen species (Cinnamomum camphora and Cyclobalanopsis glauca). Except C. glauca, however, E-O₃ had no significant effects on stomatal conductance (gₛ), total phenols and ascorbate contents. Difference in O₃ sensitivity among all species was strongly attributed to specific leaf mass rather than gₛ. It suggests that some subtropical tree species will be threatened by rising O₃ concentrations in the near future.

The sensitivity of nitrifiers to crude oil released by the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in Gulf of Mexico was examined using characterized ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea to develop a bioassay and to gain further insight into the ecological response of these two groups of microorganisms to marine oil spills. Inhibition of nitrite production was observed among all the tested ammonia-oxidizing organisms at 100ppb crude oil. Nitrosopumilus maritimus, a cultured representative of the abundant Marine Group I Archaea, showed 20% inhibition at 1 ppb, a much greater degree of sensitivity to petroleum than the tested ammonia-oxidizing and heterotrophic bacteria. The differing susceptibility may have ecological significance since a shift to bacterial dominance in response to an oil spill could potentially persist and alter trophic interactions influenced by availability of different nitrogen species.

Triolein embedded cellulose acetate membrane (TECAM) passive samplers provide potentially powerful tool for monitoring time weighted average concentrations (CTWA) of trace hydrophobic organic contaminants in water. To study the field performance of TECAM, exchange kinetics of chemicals between water and TECAM were studied at different temperature and water flow rates. Results showed that the uptake rate constant (kᵤ) in TECAM was less sensitive to temperature variation than the SPMD and Chemcatcher. The kᵤ in TECAM was sensitive to even a slight change of the flow rate, which required the field calibration using performance reference compounds (PRCs). To estimate CTWA by TECAM, both empirical model and WBL model were compared in laboratory conditions, and only small differences were observed between the predicted and measured kᵤ. Field validation was conducted to test the sampler performance alongside spot sampling. A good agreement of water concentration was obtained by the two sampling techniques.

We examined Hg biogeochemistry in Baihua Reservoir, a system affected by industrial wastewater containing mercury (Hg). As expected, we found high levels of total Hg (THg, 664–7421 ng g⁻¹) and monomethylmercury (MMHg, 3–21 ng g⁻¹) in the surface sediments (0–10 cm). In the water column, both THg and MMHg showed strong vertical variations with higher concentrations in the anoxic layer (>4m) than in the oxic layer (0–4 m), which was most pronounced for the dissolved MMHg (p < 0.001). However, mercury levels in biota samples (mostly cyprinid fish) were one order of magnitude lower than common regulatory values (i.e. 0.3–0.5 mg kg⁻¹) for human consumption. We identified three main reasons to explain the low fish Hg bioaccumulation: disconnection of the aquatic food web from the high MMHg zone, simple food web structures, and biodilution effect at the base of the food chain in this eutrophic reservoir.

This study evaluated the effect of continuous and batch feeding on the removal of 8 pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine, naproxen, diclofenac, ibuprofen, caffeine, salicylic acid, ketoprofen and clofibric acid) from synthetic wastewater in mesocosm-scale constructed wetlands (CWs). Both loading modes were operated at hydraulic application rates of 5.6 cm day⁻¹ and 2.8 cm day⁻¹. Except for carbamazepine, clofibric acid and naproxen, removal in CWs was significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced under the batch versus continuous mode. For all compounds tested except naproxen, values for first-order decay constants (k) for drain and fill operation were higher than that for the continuous mode of operation. Correlation between the distribution coefficient (log Dₒw) and removal efficiencies of pharmaceutical compounds in the CWs, showed that pharmaceutical removal efficiency was significantly (p < 0.1) and inversely correlated with log Dₒw value, but not with log Kₒw value.

Complementary sorption of different chemicals was expected and investigating the relationship between the sorption inhibition of primary sorbate (ΔQᵖʳⁱ) and sorption of secondary sorbate (Qˢᵉᶜ) could provide a new angle to understand coadsorption of different chemicals. This study used bisphenol A (BPA) as the primary adsorbate, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the competitor, and carbon nanotubes as model adsorbents to study their complementary and competitive adsorption. At low BPA concentrations, the sorption of SMX (Qˢᵉᶜ) exceeded BPA sorption inhibition (ΔQᵖʳⁱ), indicating that these two chemicals complementarily adsorbed on their respectively preferred sorption sites. At high BPA concentrations, higher ΔQᵖʳⁱ was observed in comparison to Qˢᵉᶜ, which may be resulted from different packing efficiencies of the adsorbed SMX and BPA. This study emphasized that both competitive and complementary sorption should be discussed in binary sorption system.

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition and [CO₂] are increasing and represent environmental problems. Planting fast-growing species is prospering to moderate these environmental impacts by fixing CO₂. Therefore, we examined the responses of growth, photosynthesis, and defense chemical in leaves of Eucalyptus urophylla (U) and the hybrid of E. deglupta × E. camadulensis (H) to different CO₂ and nitrogen levels. High nitrogen load significantly increased plant growth, leaf N, net photosynthetic rate (Agᵣₒwₜₕ), and photosynthetic water use efficiency (WUE). High CO₂ significantly increased Agᵣₒwₜₕ, photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) and WUE. Secondary metabolite (SM, i.e. total phenolics and condensed tannin) was specifically altered; as SM of U increased by high N load but not by elevated [CO₂], and vice versa for SM of H.

The coexistence of heavy metals and antibiotics is common in the environment, and their interactions may mutually alter their environmental behaviors and risks. This study investigated ofloxacin (OFL)–Cu(II) interaction using fluorescence quenching experiments. The possible artifacts were excluded and OFL quenching was attributed to static quenching as suggested by the linear Stern–Volmer plot and decreased quenching with increased temperature. The OFL–Cu(II) interaction was quantitatively described using a stoichiometry equation. The calculation suggested that OFL–Cu(II) association was the mixture of 1:1 and 1:2 complexes. The negative ΔG values and the negative ΔH values suggested that the complexation is a spontaneous and exothermic process. Cation-π binding and electrostatic interaction were excluded and the complexation of Cu(II) with OFL ketonic and carboxyl groups was proposed through UV–visible spectrum characterization, pH dependent complexation, and thermodynamic analysis.
