Wit Tarnchalanukit
An investigation on fisheries resources and aquatic weeds in the Khlong Saeng River Basin, Surat Thani Province was done in March - December, 1979. The main objective of the survey was to know the present status of fresh water fisheries resources and other related fields in the proposed Chiew Larn Dam including in delta area of Ao Ban Don. Results of the investigation are: Ban Bang Khaew to Ban Had Khan. Most of the fish were cyprinids (90.56%), and pristolepids (5.17%), and the others were miscellaneous fishes (4.27%). Standing crop was 5.86 kg/rai on the average. Plankton productivity in all sampled stations both in wet and dry seasons was quite high. Most of the plankton found was phytoplankton (63.23% in the wet and 99.85% in the dry season). Thirty eight genera of both phyto and zooplankton were found during the wet season whereas 41 were found in the dry season. For bottom fauna, 8 species of mollisks were found. Standing crop was 2.123 kg/rai (an average number of 2.5225 organisms per sq.m). No specimen of aquatic weeds were found along the river channel. Thirty four species of weeds and grasses were present at both edges of the river banks and in the rice fields including the marshes. Only 2 species of floating weeds were found in the delta area. Water in the river is soft and some characteristics are favorable for the growth of aquatic life. Suspended solids and dissolved solids contents are not too high. With proper treatment, the water can be used for community water supply.
