Four methods for analysis of a length frequency distribution are examined. The Beverton and Holt relationship Z/K = (L infinity-l)/(l-l)(, c) is shown to hold under a generalized version of the von Bertalanffy growth equation. It is shown how the shape of the length frequency curve can give rough estimates of Z/K. Alternatively, Z/K may be estimated by 2C('2)/(l-C)('2) where C('2) = Var (l)/(l-l)(, c)('2). Another relationship between Z/K and L infinity can be found by using the mean weight in the catch.
