Activities have expanded from the 45 villages of Shamshernager Union to Alinagar Union and more recently agronomy activities also to Kamalgonj. HEED has become part of a National Cropping Systems Network which involves both government and voluntary agencies. 23 rice demonstrations were set up in 3 unions to show new varieties and balanced fertilizer usage. Purbachi yielded an average 55 maunds per acre, out-yielding recognized superior varieties such as BR-3. Last year in one demonstration, Sonalika wheat yielded 43 maunds per acre with the result of that this coming winter season a block scheme of 16 acres involving 45 farmers will be grown in the same area. The new variety sweet potato AS 35/2 was released this winter season. The fisheries section have been working intensively with 40 ponds in 2 unions. Over 7,000 Napier grass seedling have been sold in the 2 monsoon seasons which represents interest in grass cultivation for cattle feed. Old poultry stock have been replaced with a pure Rhode Island Red flock.
