Effect of sulphate of ammonia, triple-super-phosphate and muriate of potash on the release of ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen

An experiment was carried out to study the effect of sulphate of ammonia, triple-super-phosphate and muriate of potash on the release of ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen under laboratory condition. The fertilizers were applied singly and in combination in sandy loam soil, at the rate of 0, 80, 130 lbs N/a from sulphate of ammonia and P205 and K20 each), 40, 80 lbs, from triple-super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively. Ammoniacal and nitrate nitrogen were determined at the end of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 weeks. The results of this study are: (1) when sulphate of ammonia was applied singly, the release of ammoniacal nitrogen increased with the increased dose of nitrogenous fertilizer; (2) the release of nitrate nitrogen was found highest at 80 lbs. nitrogen; (3) the nitrate nitrogen remained almost static when increased doses of phosphatic fertilizer was applied in combination with nitrogenous fertilizer whereas the release of ammoniacal nitrogen fluctuated; (4) with the increased doses of potassic fertilizer, the release of nitrate nitrogen reduced rapidly but the release of ammoniacal nitrogen fluctuated; and (5) when sulphate of ammonia was applied with phosphatic and potassic fertilizers, nitrate nitrogen release was static whereas the release of ammoniacal nitrogen fluctuated.
