[Crop characterization and climate of the "Vinhos Verdes" wine region [grapes, Portugal]]

This paper is the first contribution to a classification of the vintages of the Region of the "Vinhos Verdes" and their interdependence on the climatic conditions during the vegetative period of the vine. Since it was impossible either to test all the many varieties of this wine or to carry out organoleptic examinations, this paper is based on chemical analysis of the wines of the cooperative winegrowers associations which are considered to be representative. The characterisation of the vintages was made by relating the differences to the comparative averages of the alcohol content and fixed acidity taking 4 levels of quality into consideration. After trying various methods of characterising the vintages in relation to the meteorological data, we opted for the Ribereau-Gayon and Peynaud method and referred to the temperature, hours of sunlight and rainfall. Finally, we compared quality to quantity and concluded, with reservations, that the 2 were not incompatible

Ce travail n'est que le premier contribut pour une classification des recoltes de la Region Delimitee des Vinhos Verdes et pour l'etude de leur interdependance avec les conditions climatiques pendant la periode vegetative de la vigne. Devant la pulverisation de la production et l'impossibilite de faire la degustation de tous les vins, nous nous sommes servi des caracteristiques analytiques des vins des Caves Cooperatives, les considerant comme representatifs. La caracterisation des recoltes a ete faite par les detours par rapport aux moyennes ponderees de la graduation alcoolique et de l'acidite fixe, ayant considere 4 classes de qualite. Apres avoir essaye la caracterisation des recoltes en fonction des donnes meteorologiques par diverses methodes, on a opte pour la methode indiquee par Ribereau-Gayon et Peynaud, par rapport a la temperature, aux heures de soleil et a la precipitation. Finalement on a compare la qualite a la quantite, concluant qu'elles ne sont pas incompatibles, bien que sans valeur definitive
