Variation of free and conjugated abscisic acid, phaseic acid and dihydrophaseic acid levels in ripening barley grains

The contents of free abscisic acid (ABA) and its conjugated hydrolysable form, of phaseic acid (PA) and of dihydrophaseic acid (DPA) were analysed by means of GLC in developing grains of field grown and those of greenhouse cultivated barley plants. The level of free ABA increased during development, reaching a maximum which coincided with the termination of assimilate import. Afterwards the ABA level decreased sharply. Conversely, the concentration of conjugated ABA increased after the termination of assimilate import. The maximum level of conjugated ABA was, however, low compared to that of free ABA. PA and DPA were present during all stages of development. Their kinetics and amounts both suggest that they are partially produced from existing ABA in the kernels, but may also be imported from other parts of the plant.
