Performance of identical oil palm progenies in different environment [Papua New Guinea and Malaysia]

In 1968, crosses between dura, tenera and pisifera palms were used to plant thirty-six progenies in genetic trials at Dami, West New Britain, Papua New Guinea and near Banting, Selangor, Malaysia. Rainfall is higher at Dami (3900 mm) than at Banting (2030 mm) and there are more rainy days. Although male flower production is greater at Dami, intensive pollination is required as there are virtually no pollinating insects. There was so much plasticity between primary yield components that, despite large differences in the mean values of some components, the yield of oil per palm was similar in the two environments. Correlations between the two environments were good for characters that are strongly inherited but were less satisfactory for those which are more dependent upon the environment. Both environments are favourable for high yields and there was little evidence of a genotype x environment interaction. Progenies susceptible to magnesium deficiency tended to be lower-yielding at Dami where deficiencies occurred
