There was no consistent effect of interval row spacing on light interception but with row and hill spacings of 50 cm, light interception was markedly increased. The chemical quality of tobacco leaves (midrid and lamina) in terms of reducing sugar was significantly reduced as interval row spacing increased to 150 cm. Nicotine content was not significantly affected by the variables used. Correlation analysis revealed significant association of yield with CGR (crop growth rate), and LAI (leaf area index) with a positive contribution of 34% to the former. CGR and light interception at the early growth stages of tobacco were positively correlated to LAI. NAR (net assimilation rate) and RLGR (relative leaf growth rate) significantly contributed to CGR increase. TDMY (total dry matter yield) was positively associated with NAR, CGR, LAI but negatively correlated with LAR
