Commercial tea planting in Sri Lanka began in 1867. It presently covers 244,203 hectares from almost sea level to 2,000 metres altitude mean sea-level. Over the years various genetic improvement methods have been developed and cultural practices improved. These are described. Yields have increased and the highest recorded was above 8000 kilogrammes per hectare per annum. To improve tea production, various research projects of practical relevance are being undertaken by the Tea Research Institute. Presently, attention is being directed towards effecting economies in the use of fertilizers by increasing their efficiency of utilisation. The government on its part have introduced several subsidy schemes to help the smallholders and plantation operation
