Mixed systems of plant production in Africa, past, present and future
1984
Wood, P.J.
The use of mixed systems for agricultural and forestry production have been practiced for centuries. In the tropics a simple system where the use of agricultural crops in assisting the establishment of forest plantations (taungya) is wide spread; and in Africa and elsewhere shifting agriculture in the past provided a sustainable land use system which is only breaking down under the pressure of increasing population. In general this paper considers all multiple cropping systems including agroforestry agri-silviculture and taungya as mixed systems. These systems are discussed in detail with definitions.
