Tetracosanol and hexacosanol content of Greek olive oils [detection of adulteration]

Tetracosanol and hexacosanol were determined gas chromatographically in olive oil, B-residue oil (olive pomace oil) and B-residue oil stearines. For the gas chromatography determinations pentaconasol was used as an internal standard. In olive oil samples the sum of tetracosanol and hexacoxanol content ranged from 10 mg to 32 mg/100 g oil. In B-residue oils (crude or refined) values ranged from 140 mg to 460 mg/100 g. Equally high values were determined in B-residue oil stearines. In few cases unusually high contents of linear alcohols were found in cooking fats and margarines prepared from olive oil. It is proposed that tetracosanol and hexacosanol content could be an index to qualitatively detect adulteratation of hydrogenated olive oil with B-residue oil or B-residue oil stearines
