In two trials conducted during the 1980-81 dry season a 'herbicide package' consisting of a preemergence tank mix of pendimethalin, atrazine, and paraquat gave yields equal to the farmers' practice, but the higher costs of the herbicide package resulted in lower net returns. A survey of corn farmers in Batangas during the 1981-82 dry season revealed that under present weed control practices yields ranged from 2 tons per hectare (t/ha) to over 4 t/ha. The most common weed control practice consisted of harrowing at about 18 days after seeding (DAS) followed by (fb) a single cultivation at about 35 DAS. Based on farmers' estimates, the average total nitrogen applied by farmers during the season was 118.7 kg/ha. IPB var. 1 was the most common variety grown. Satisfactory and economical weed control can be achieved with the present practices if it is accompanied by good land preparation, appropriate fertilizer levels and the planting of a high yielding varieties
