Isolation and characterization of mannan-degrading organisms with coconut residue as substrate [Philippines]

Seventy-two microorganisms and two pure cultures with the ability to grow on a medium with coconut residue. As the only carbon source were evaluated for their saccharifying activity on coconut residue and coconut mannans. Four isolates and two pure cultures which exhibited the highest enzyme activities were characterized. The identity of the four isolates are Eschirichia coli, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus saprophuticus. The effect of carbon source on the enzyme activity was studied. Only the presence of coconut mannans and coconut residue itself triggered enzyme synthesis. When grown on specific subtrates, Escheridichia coli produced the highest mannanase A activity whereas Bacillus megaterium exhibited the highest mannanase B activity. Greater saccharification of coconut residue by the isolates were attained by growing them on a medium with coconut residue as the only carbon source
