The biology and phenology of the sugarcane giant borer Phragmatoecia gumata swinhoe [pest insect; Malaysia]

The mean total duration, from egg to adult emergence was 194.96+-0.91 and 204.74+-0.87 days for male and female. The number of larval instar is variable from eight to fourteen due to the disturbance of the larvae while changing fresh materials. The mean life span of mated male and female adult moths was 3.47+-0.31 and 3.24+-0.24 days. An unmated male and female lived an average of 3.22+-0.15 and 3.28+-0.15 days. The mean number of eggs laid was 298.94+-14.05 and 293.94+-7.59 for mated and unmated female under laboratory condition. Sex ratio was 1:1.4. There are 5 species of parasitoids and 19 species of predators recorded. Behavioural studies on the adults and larvae are described. Damage caused by this borer and control measures are also discussed. A phenological study of giant borer moth in the plantation was done during 1977-1979. The total number of male and female moths trapped was 45 and 2879 individuals respectively
