The utilisation of roughage by-products by ruminants in Malaysia
1982
Devendra, C.
A comprehensive review is presented on cassava leaves, cocoa pod husk, palm press fibre, rice straw, sago waste, sugarcane tops and bagasse. Data is presented on various aspects of chemical treatment on bagasse and rice straw, and also on species differences on the utilisation of dietary fibre. Present evidence suggests that much of the work is of a fundamental nature and these need to be extended to large scale field studies that can demonstrate effective feeding systems. The strategy for development calls for more emphasis on avenues that offer potential possibilities of increased production, continuous and vigorous research and increased resource use in the future. This approach has the final aim of ensuring the development of appropriate technology and making these available as viable production systems that can ensure maximum protein production from the ruminant resources
