Effects of dietary protein, nutrient intake levels and mating ages on reproductive performance of gilts

An experiment was conducted to study the reproductive performance of 72 Large White gilts which received different dietary protein levels and different nutrient intake levels. The study found that the averages of conception rates of the gilts were 73.68, 83.33, 75.00 and 89.47 percent, because of the different dietary protein levels given which were 12, 13, 14 and 18 percent. Conception rate was 86.36 percent for gilts fed with low nutrient level (1.5, 2.0 kg per day); 80.77 percent and 75.00 percent for gilts fed with medium (2.0, 2.5 kg per day); and high nutrient level (2.5, 3.0 kg per day). Dietary protein level taken during pregnancy had a negligible influence on weight gained during pregnancy and weight lost during sucking period. Differences of weight gained during pregnancy were highly significant (P.01) because of the influence of nutrient levels. However, weight loss during sucking period and after 108 days of pregnancy until after farrowing was not the effect of nutrient level. The study indicated that litter size and litter weight from birth till weaning were not significant in every factor studied. However, gilts who mate when they were 10 to 12 months of age tended to have the highest reproductive performance
