Nematodes associated with sugarcane in Malaysia

Stunted growth of sugarcane plants in Gula Perlis/Felda plantation was attributed to the abundance of plant parasitic nematodes in the soil as well as on the roots. Twelve genera were collectively recorded from 14 fields samples, of which five were new records on sugarcane in Malaysia. Pratylenchus sp. was the predominant nematode and present in high number both in soil and root samples. The other ten genera recovered from the soil were Tylenchorhynchus, Hoplolaimus, Meloidogyne, Helicotylenchus, Pratylenchus, Scutellonema, Macroposthonia, Trichodorus, Longidorus and Xiphinema. Extracts from the roots only produced the endoparasitic nematodes, namely, Pratylenchus, Hoplolaimus and Helicotylenchus. The presence of Meloidogyne and Rotylenchulus on the cane root was established by staining in acid fuschin lactophenol
