The aim of this research is to provide descriptive and analytic information on energy sources and end uses in a sample of Balinese villages for agriculture, domestic and transport activities, the adaptive responses of the Balinese to increases in population pressure and the introduction of modern mechanically and electrically powered technology. With the focus on environmental stability and effective resource utilisation, energy and material resource flows are being studied from a contemporary and historical perspective to determine resource consumption/exploitation trajectories, and compare changes in resource utilisation/dependencies over 50 years. Three environmentally archetypical villages were chosen to represent differing: (i) agro-climatic settings (ii) population densities; (iii) modernisation influences; and (iv) physical accessability. The focus of data collection is the influence of these factors on energy sources and end-uses; agricultural systems; living standards; food processing; and the physical environment.
