Ecological Programme on the control of sedimentation of rivers and canals in existing irrigation systems - a case study [Philippines]
1982
Coloma, R.D.
The sedimentation project is undertaken by MAB [Man and Biosphere], with the National Irrigation Administration as the leading agency and other member agencies as collaborators. Its objective is to determine the influence of sedimentation on water yield and quality in rivers and irrigation canals and on rice farming and related agricultural enterprises, including the flora and fauna of affected areas. It also included the formulation of preventive and control measures to minimize sedimentation and its hazardous effects on patterns for silted irrigation systems. The Agno River Irrigation Systems (ARIS) was chosen as the pilot project. The sedimentation problem, mine tailings and soil erosion are discussed. Remedial measures to alleviate the present situation have been instituted
