Effect of weaning age of piglets on their performance and survival [swine]

This paper discusses the results and presents the conclusions drawn. No significant difference concerning the number of liveborn piglets has been found, either between groups within single experiments, or between the average numbers in both repetitions (10.30-11.10). The litters were quite equal and the farrowing results coincided with the general fertility rate of Yorkshire sows. The weaning age influenced significantly the number of 28-day-old piglets. The greatest number of raised piglets (10.2) was realized in the group where weaning was at 28 days. This number was significantly smaller in the other groups. The weaning age of piglets exerted more influence than the parturition weight on the final weight on the 28th day. There was obvious regularity of trends of the final weight. It increased gradually from the earliest to the latest-weaned group (28 days). The weaning age did not exert a significant influence on the regularity of development until 71 days of age, since the weight in single groups was almost equal. The highest gain in the period between parturition and the 28th day was achieved at the weaning age of 28, and the lowest at the weaning age of 7 days. The gain in piglets weaned 3 days after parturition was significantly lower than in those weaned later. There is a significant difference in the consumption of mixture given before the starter; the quantity consumed reduces going from the earliest towards the latest weaning age.
