[Protein degradability of two cultivars of Festuca arundinacea (Schreb.) in grazing steers. Its relationship with the rumen environment [animal nutrition]]
1985
Garcia Astrada, A.
Protein degradability in tall fescue cv. Maris Kasba (MK) and cv. El Palen que (EP) was estimated in grazing steers using in situ digestion with fresh forage. A crossover experimental design for two treatments, two periods and six steers were used. Three steers grazed MK (T1) and other three EP (T2). The effective degradability of proteins was similar between treatments (28.32 vs. 28.85 for T1 and T2 respectively). Ph, N-NH3 concentration and acetic acid proportion were higher on T1 than on T2. The soluble N fraction, acid butiric proportion and ruminal content were higher on T2 than on T1. Protein degradability rate, acid propionic proportion and ruminal volume did not differ between treatments. Due to a compensation effect between treatments in relation to its components variables, no differences in effective degradability were detected. Ruminal environment of steers grazing MK was different than that of steers grazing EP.
