The morphology and histology of the alimentary canal of Mystus gulio (Hamilton) has been described. It is an estuarine fish and carnivorous in habit. The oesophagus is short and opens directly into the stomach. Intestinal caeca are absent. The intestine is simple, short, and has only one coil around the stomach. The buccal cavity is lined by stratified epithelial cells with taste buds. The oesophagus consists of mucosa, sub-mucosa and muscularis. The villi are long. The lamina propria is well-developed. In the stomach gastric glands are present. The intestinal mucosa in best with large numbers of goblet cells. The mucosal folds of the anterior intestine are longer than of the posterior intestine
