The necessity for closer cooperation among secondary agricultural information services: an analysis of AGRICOLA, AGRIS and CAB
1986
Deselaers, N. (Federal Ministry of Food Agriculture and Forestry, Bonn, (Germany, F.R.))
There are three comprehensive databases with approximately the same scope in the agricultural sector: AGRICOLA, AGRIS, and CAB. The majority of journal articles are recorded in two or three databases. With regard to overlapping there are clear differences in terms of regions and special subjects. Nonetheless, the simultaneous existence of the three databases leads to an unnecessarily high amount of time, money and effort spent on the establishment of agricultural secondary services, the availability of databases in host computers, the realization of searches, and the analyses of their results by scientists. Estimates of the additional amount of time, money, and effort required for the establishment and use of three databases are given and compared to those for one integrated database. It would be possible to considerably reduce the amount of time, money and effort spent, through intensifying cooperation between the producers of databses. Suggestions concerning intensified cooperation are put out for discussion
