Effects of Nitrogen and Potassium on yield, quality and chemical composition of Kaba - Koulak tobacco

A field study was conducted during 1972-1974 in Drama and Karditsa to evaluate the effects and interactions of nitrogen and potassium fertilization rates on the yield, value, burning capacity and chemical composition of Kaba-Koulak tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. KP 14/a) leaves. Nitrogen was applied at the rates of 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg/ha and potassium at the rates of 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg K/ha. As applied nitrogen increased from 30 to 90 kg/ha there was a trend for leaf yield and value to increase in Drama, while in Karditsa there was a trend for leaf yield and value to increase as applied nitrogen increased from 30 to 60 kg/ha. Further increase of applied nitrogen to 120 kg/ha tended to decrease leaf yield and value in both areas. When nitrogen increased from 30 to 120 kg/ha the burning capacity and the percentage of calcium, magnesium, total alkaloids and total nitrogen increased significantly. There was a trend for percentage leaf potassium to increase as applied nitrogen increased. No significant potassium rate effect was observed on yield, value and percentage of total alkaloids and total nitrogen. There was a trend for percentage leaf potassium to increase and percentage leaf calcium and magensium to decrease as applied potassium increased from 40 to 160 kg/ha. Generally, for production of good yield and quality of Kuba-koulak tobacco in soils similar to that of Drama and Karditsa,which were used in this study, the rate of applied nitrogen should be from 30 to 60 kg/ha and the rate of applied potassium should be higher than 40 kg/ha and up to 120 kg K/ha
