The duration of dormancy among the paddy varieties grown in Vidarbha ranges from 20 to 84 days. Dormancy in the initial 16 days appeared to be controlled by a balance between the presence of inhibitors and promoters present in the seed and later on due to impermeability of seed coat to water. Early and medium varieties had a shorter dormancy period compared to late varieties. Hot water treatment was found effective for breaking the paddy seed dormancy
