Effect of bentonite on some properties of Dor gypsiferous soil and plant growth (in Iraq)

This study included two experiments in which two kinds of bentonites are used. The first experiment: four soil samples with different gypsum percentages (1.67%, 13.81%, 27.24%, 54.89%) were prepared by thorough mixing of high gypsum and low gypsum soil. Three crops were planted successively in the greenhouse, millet, berseem and sweet corn. It was found that bentonite addition to gypsiferous soil material resulted in decreased yield of dry matter of all harvest crops. In the second experiment four soil samples having gypsum levels of 5.4%, 10.33%, 15.64% and 20.83% were prepared in the same method as used in the first experiment. Bentonite addition resulted in reduced yield of dry matter of both corn and millet, also bentonite additon to gypsiferous soils as an amendment had generally negative effect on important soil properties such as stability of aggregate modulus of rupture (i.e. crusting) and hydraulic conductivity especially at high levels of gypsum
