Chromosome number and behavior during meiosis of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) and wild relatives found in the Philippines

Flower buds of varying sizes of 10 sweet potato cultivars and 4 wild Ipomoea species found in the Philippines were collected at hourly intervals from 8 o'clock in the morning to 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Cell division was found to be most active at around noon. Lengths and widths of flower buds with microsporocytes undergoing meiotic stages varied among cultivars and among species; sweet potato cultivars have bigger diameters but are shorter compared to those of the wild Ipomoea species. The number of microsporocytes per anther ranged from 9 to 348 with the sweet potato cultivars falling midway within this range. In sweet potato, meiosis was observed to be regular in about 80% of the cells studied with irregularities observed in the rest of the cells in the form of chromosome clumping, abnormal grouping of chromosomes, occurrence of very few chromosomes and the presence of laggards at anaphase I and II. In every cultivar, multivalents were observed during diakinesis ranging from trivalents to hexavalents. Chromosome number was found to be 2n = 90 in about 80% of the cells observed
