Physicochemical characteristics of some coastal saline soils of Bangladesh

An attempt has been made to characterize some pedons representing the saline phases of three soil series from the poldered areas of Barisal and Patuakhali districts of Bangladesh. These soils have a loamy texture and silt is the dominant size fraction. The sand/silt ratio of the soils indicate that stratification occurs within the pedons but it is not too abrupt. These soils are found to be essentially noncalcareous and they range from nonsaline to saline. The electrical conductivity of the saturation extract (ECe) ranges from 3.1 to 12.6 m mhos cm- 1 at 25 deg C. In the solution phase Na+ is by far the dominant cation while both Cl-and SO(4)- are dominant among the anions. The cation exchange capacity of the soils is relatively lower and ranges from 12.6 to 20.6 me/100 g of soil. Among the exchangeable cations Ca++ and Mg ++ are dominant. All the three soils show a low degree of sodicity (ESP). pH ranges from 6.0 to 8.0 while the SAR ranges from 6 to 21. The soils are characterized as saline nonsodic
