Preservation of silkworm cocoons by radiation

A dose of 30 krad found to be suitable for preservation of silkworm cocoons, Bombyx mori for three months in place of traditional heat treatment. The preserving dose of cocoons found to be varied seasonally. Variability of the dose response was also recorded in different varieties of cocoons. Higher doses of radiation was applied (100-1000 krad) to investigate the keeping quality of irradiated cocoon and find out the effects of radiation on reeling, winding, tensile strength and cohesion test of raw silk
