The Belize trash fishmeal project as a pilot project and as a semi-commercial venture

The major objective was to develop a scheme for small-scale fishmeal production to utilize the abundance of fish waste produced in Belize from a variety of sources including shrimp trawling nets, fishermen's nets and fish processing plants. Fish is collected from strategic locations and either processed or stored as silage (with added molasses). For process, fish is minced in a specially designed machine similar to a compost shredder, then cooked to 140 degrees F. The fish waste is then dried using a rotary system with a blower and heat from solar collectors supplemented by a heat exchanger fired by waste materials such as coconut husks. The designs for components of the drying system are presented. It is planned to establish a semi-commercial operation using the technology developed
