Evaluation of sunflower cultivars
1987
Hadjichristodoulou, A. (Agricultural Research Inst., Nicosia (Cyprus))
In all, 187 cultivars of sunflower were evaluated. Yields of the best cultivars were 3.5-4.0 t/ha, with an oil content of 50.56%. The kernel yield of Fundulea 55, a cultivar tested for three years, was 3.4 t/ha, plant height at maturity was 141 cm, 1000-kernel weight was 60 g, volume weight was 41 kg/h1, oil content was 55% and nitrogen content was 2.3%. Other promising cultivars were Multibest 1, R0 66, Dahlgren and Heliandalus. The performance of sunflower in Cyprus compares favourably with that in other countries. Wide variation among cultivars in plant height was obtained, especially in 1986 (117 cm to 283 cm). Some of the short lines gave satisfactory yields. Selection over two seasons within the cultivar HS 52 produced plants shorter by 40-47 cm, and earlier by 9-11 days than the original variety, without reduction in yield. There was no significant correlation between kernel yield and important traits, except in one case in which there was a significant correlation between yield and oil content. The data provided by these trials are useful for assessing the potential of sunflower as commercial crop in Cyprus
